    Exclamation A New Math Dilemma!!!

If you have ONLY $20.00 and you must buy with it 20 animals as a mix of the following three animals:
    sheep $4.00
    chicken $0.50
    bird $.25
you have to buy at least one of each kind and the number of the animals you have to buy has to be 20 and worth an even $20.00
so many of each kind will you have?

caddilac is right. you don't even need a formula to figure this out. my little bro could probably do it!

    3 sheep = $12
    15 chickens = $7.50
    2 birds = $.50
    TOTAL
    20 animals = $20

Ya, if he had Excel... I doubt a calc professor would except that has a correct solution, because in higher math classes like calc, its not about the answer, its about how you arrived at the answer

Ya, im tryin to find some of my old books, but like I said... I thought it was more of a pre-calc class (linear algebra to most).... some schools are different though, so it may be incorporated in a first year calc course as the first chapter or two

let x = number of sheep
    y = number of chickens
z = number of birds and
    solve the system of equations

    4x + 0.5y + 0.25 z = 20
    x + y + z = 20

you will get your answers in parametric form, but we must choose a parameter such that all x ,y ,z values are integers

    i will solve it later

So off the top of my head.... Solve for 'y' first...

    You get y = (56.25/3.5)t

Plug this back in for 'y' in the first equation and solve for 'x'.... 'x' will than equal "SOMENUMBER"t

U place both these values back in the first equation and solve for 't'... once you have the value for 't' you will easily be able to figure out the rest....
