It would require a really substantial amount of product to catch the attention of the federal law enforcement agencies. If it's just a couple vials or some dumb ish like that, then it stays a local matter.
If the amount is enough to illicit the monitoring of your incoming/outgoing mail, then the feds would be involved, and local police will be the least of your worries.
EDIT: If you are in trouble, and this isn't a hypothetical post...just one piece of advice: KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! Don't say anything to anyone aside from your lawyer. Even the "cool" detective that comes to talk to you, shoots the shit, etc...**** him. He's just trying to pry out information.
