I like the simple approach already suggested....just say hello and introduce yourself. I like the question about what she's listening to....its a good way to get started. Definitly watch for the signs that she's not wanting to chat....eye contact, etc.

If you want to test the water, then just walk past her when she gets off the stairmaster and say "Hi" and have a smile on your face If she smiles and says "Hi" back at least you have subtly broken the ice. Next day I would then go up and introduce myself. This isnt rocket science bro. I know its tough makeing the first move but, "no pain" = "no gain". You will never know, if you dont have a go.

I usually just say Hi, how are you as i pass and just wait patiently to see her a few times at the gym. You'll see if she is interested she'll find something to do in your area to say hi or start conversation. Trust me i am an ex-obese too and no matter how many girls tell me i look great today, I still dont have the confidence like some of my friends to just walk up and start Bs'ing with women.
