Hooker (Anthony Roberts) plays "hooker" on his Rugby team, ie: He's the guy, front and center in the Scrum, who "hooks" the ball, with his legs back through the Forwards to the Eight-Man who holds it for the Scrum-Half, who hopefully can get it off to the Backs who will make at least a LITTLE yardage before there's a penalty and he has to go back in and do it again. Also throws the ball in the line-outs. Usually shortish, stocky, strong, and...somewhat crazy.
And, yes, there are about a million jokes about "supporting your local hooker" in Rugby.
"Hooker" is pretty famous in AAS circles for his writing and research. I think he wants to get a little professional recognition as a legitimate writer, a guy with a real name, as is his due.
