as far as what patents have to do with the FDA, though the FDA doesn't directly make money off of patents, it does make money through taxes. higher prices means higher taxes which means more money for the FDA. now if something can be patented, that means one company alone can market it without any other company legally being able to for a number of years. however, if something can't be patented, that means far more competition, which means lower prices, which in the long run means less taxes. also, the costs for chemically synthesized products are far more expensive than simple herbs and extracts. this also means far more money from those kind of companies for the FDA through taxes based on expenses.
if you think the FDA is so concerned for our health rather than their wallets, here's something to take a look at: http://www.larouchepub.com/other/200...r_profits.html the FDA has always been and always will be about profits at the expense of the consumer. after all, look at cigarettes. they not only allow cigarettes on the market knowing very well their health risks, but they even allow the tobacco companies to add all those toxins like tar, ammonia, arsenic, and literally over 300 other toxic chemicals to their cigarettes to supposedly increase their addictive qualities. now you gonna still try to act as if the FDA is looking out for us???
here is another example of where the FDA is more concerned about profits than the publics health/safety: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...-2004Sep9.html i could literally give you a list of websites showing things they've gotten caught doing that were underhanded at the expense of the consumer. now, lets show me some things they've done that were truly with our best interest in mind without the media and general public basically forcing their hand to do so? i can assure you, you'll fall well short in that area of evidence.
as far as what you said about a medical company, yes if it's meds, then they'll assist you to an extent knowing what potential future profits lie in doing so. however, start a new herbal remedy company and they'll give you the go without any assistance, then once they know you've pulled in a decent profit, they'll shut you down and confiscate all profits. i've seen it done over a dozen times to perfectly legitimate products.
as far as your suggestion on doing your own research into products and their claims, i strongly agree. however, i also advise doing the same for prescription meds (which if at all possible, i encourage people to avoid). prescription meds tend to have far more severe health consequences as opposed to the typical supplements found on the market. this is another reason the FDA backs meds over anything else is the fact that meds can potentially cause numerous other health problems when taken, hence more money spent, and then you're back to more money for the FDA.
on a final note about the FDA, i also know many pharmaceutical companies hand them money "under the table" or provide FDA employees with "partnerships" in order to pull strings. considering those pharmaceutical companies make far more profit from their overpriced meds as opposed to herbal companies, naturally the FDA wants more of them around. after all, who would you rather be around, a ton of people with very little money, or a handfull of people with a lot of money willing to throw some your way for some "favors"? i'll do some more research on where FDA pulls profits from and get back to you on more of this later.
