This could possibly be an idiotic question...but:
how bad is it to eat steamed broccoli/chicken with brown rice from a chinese place as a meal?

IMO, the thing about ordering out food is that you don't truly know how they're cooking it or with what, so while broccoli and chicken is a great meal, they may be using some bad fatty things to cook it in or with etc. I also believe that Chinese food places over cook their vegetables, thus taking out a lot of the nutritional value. Also, what kind of sauce is the chicken swimming in?
well I tell them not to put brown sauce on it. then I put my own low sodium soy sauce and hot sauce on it. I guess I'm just being a pussy and should just give it up and stick to my diet.
I don't eat Chinese food for the fact that everything seems really fatty, I guess some of thier stir fry's aren't too bad, but then those ones don't appeal to me. What is up with the tiny corns?
Anyway, it's always best to cook your meals yourself...
thats fine bro. its a good pro/carb meal. make sure the rice isnt fried.
Generally speaking, Chinese restaurants use loads of oil in almost all of the dishes . . . even those which look healthy on the menu. Here are some average nutritional analysis I found online:
Beef with Broccoli (35%, 46g fat)
General Tso's Chicken (33%, 59g fat)
Orange (Crispy) Beef (33%, 66g fat)
House Fried Rice (30%, 50g fat)
Chicken Chow Mein (28%, 32g fat)
Stir-Fried Vegetables (22%, 19g fat)
Szechuan Shrimp (18%, 19g fat)
Kung Pao Chicken (42%, 76g fat)
Moo Shu Pork (47%, 64g fat)
Egg Roll (52%, 11g fat)
Seriously, this was enough to make me ban Chinese altogether.
The food you just lsted is the conventional chinese food you will find in any restaraunts or buffets. However you can order the food steamed. You can get chicken and broccoli steamed with the steamed brown rice and get some type of sauce(garlic, oyster, brown) on the side and just dab some on for flavor.Or you can torture yourself like I do and eat it as DRY.

thanks for the replies. I'm gonna try to stick to my own cooking. But I'm not going to feel too bad if I don't have time and have to throw in steamed chick and broc now and then.
thanks again
No chinese here. Way too greasy and generally upsets my stomach, but that's just how they cook. Try some Japanese (no tempura though) or Vietnamese, much healthier and better tasting IMO.
if you order STEAMED chicken with STEAMED veggies, there is NO sauce on it, it is absoulty 100% healthy I eat it all the time. Anything wet in sauce sure I wouldnt trust, but steamed is steamed. you people think they use added fat in their steam or something? haha...its fine bro.
I'd make my own, because I'm not paying all that money for steamed plain shit. If I'm paying for Chinese it's going to be the sugar/carb/sauce/sodium loaded cheat food.
~SC~
word, i cook everything except for the special cheat stuff![]()
Agreed...if i wanted plain steamed stuff i'd make it for much less money. If i'm ordering chinese I'm all about the boneless spare ribs.Originally Posted by SwoleCat
To answer the question, if you get it plain and steamed your fine. It's more a money thing.
"and then....?"
