  1. #41
What I hate is I have a friend that I'll see in the gym from time to time and he'll be like "Man..I'm not gonna do low reps anymore...I dont wanna get bigger...I wanna do high reps..and just tone" Like wtf? High reps=tone I've heard that a million times and I wanna kill the person who says it everytime

I just wanna slap them, I cant even express in words how mad this makes me. What the f*ck are they talking about? Please one of the female members explain this to me why girls have this huge misconception. They obviously have never gained much muscle at all in their lives so why do they lie and believe this so strongly?

No Man should ever use the word TONE when referring to himself. That deserves a beating!

I've heard fatties talk to trainers at my gym about getting tone. They work with little 5lb weights and never step foot on a piece of cardio equipment...yeah..getting 'toned' is only a few weeks away!

    "I want to get tone."

Translation: I want to work as little as possible for some below average results because I am afriad to push my body to the limit for something real. I do want to add a lot of muscle and drop some fat but I am scared of the dedication and discipline that it might take.

Mind you, he's fat. I just look at him and I say clean foods. He just looks at me with a blank stare. Then asks me for a list of clean foods. I say chicken. He just looks at me like he's waiting for me to write a diet and training routine for him while he stands there. And I'm just looking right back at him.

You seriously didn't know what he mean't?. Can you not just have said, "listen, I really don't have the time now...blah blah blah". And left him with the impression that at least some bodybuilder's don't fit into the instant 'knuckle head' catagory.

So you've never stated the obvious too?.

You've never met someone soaking wet and asked is it raining, or someone with a smashed up car and asked did he crash it?.

Come on guys, a little tolerance. We're not that special, and in fact I know alot of guys in my different martial arts gyms that laugh at body builders and their attitude's.

I'm sorry. I already did my charity work for the day. That was explaining to a 5'4" 120 pound 26 year old who's been training for 4 years why he isn't gaining any weight. I asked him do you eat a lot? He said yes. I then asked what he ate for breakfast. He said a buttered toasted bagel and coffee and then went on and described the rest of his meals which were the same.

If I took the time to answer every stupid question I get asked about fitness or lifting I would never get anything done. Like I said earlier, when you're walking down the street and see a dentist, do you stop him on the street and expect him to look in your mouth for free? No, I don't think so. So why do you feel I'm obligated to do the same.

Well you didn't explain that before posting. Maybe next time post about something positive you've done and not something which makes you out to an unapproachable idiot.

One thing I've took through my army life, and apply it to training recruits or to my martial arts and children.. "there's no such thing as stupid questions, only stupid answers".

I bet if you got talking to a dentist on a plane you'd ask him something about his job. Deny it and I'll call you a lier.

Last time I checked, walking into some random person's office and asking them questions totally not work related is considered rude. The guy didn't know me from adam and just walked in my office. Sorry, he's the idiot. I should have asked him who he hell are you?

No, I would not. I have 2 dentists in my family. I would ask them to look in my mouth for free. That is what family's for.

This guy probably looked up and admired you for awhile, and now he thinks your a prick. Weldone.

Two dentists in the family!. No need to ask the guy on the plane then, you must already have perfect teeth. Keep treating people like you said you probably should and you might need those free services someday.

You said your coming to Spain. A little advice here. When I was in NYC in Febuary I was sickened by people's attitudes. Don't take it to Europe, we have (I'll use a NY'er term) 'zero tolerance' to it and react strongly against it.

Why do NY'ers almost boast about their attitudes?. Whenever I mentioned it I was told "your in Manhatten now, thats what we do". Fvck that sh*t, its the reason I'll never return.

Bouncer please remove the bug from your butt. Anything I say to you, you catch an attitude anyway so it's pointless.

By the way, I do just fine in Spain. No complaints. I won't be traveling to Ireland anytime soon so not for you to worry.

when you first get into bodybuilding you are happy to answer anyones questions, but after a while you realize that about 95% of people wont follow anything you tell them and it gets old real quick.

what i did was type up a basic workout routine, and basic diet with a bunch of tips. so now when people ask me "how do you get big" or "how do you lose weight" i can just hand them a sheet of paper. keeps me from coming off as an asshole and keeps me from saying the same shit over and over and over

Usually I'm happy to talk to people about training. I just keep the advice simple, talk to them about simple routines and the importance of a good gym. I don't mention diet etc until their training.

    I know what you mean.
If I have the time I will talk as long as I know I have their FULL attention.
As soon as I notice them drifting or interupting because they think they already know better I stop dead.

I have to say I enjoy discussing training/nutrition with anyone who is enthusiastic about it, he doesn't have to be knowledgeable at all, just eager to learn...

I am also very flattered when people come up to me in the gym and ask me for advice, it means I actually look a lot better then 'average' people, and that was my goal all a long...

Agreed. I will spend more time on people who actually seem to have it in them to use the advice for results.

My last conversation went something like this

HIM: Excuse me, what can I do to start putting on some more muscle.
    ME: Progressive training with concistency.

HIM: I do really well with my unit PT - first class, but I want to start using the gym regularly and add some weight.
ME: (Realizing he is really interested and I am finishing up anyway) Look man, people come in here day in and day out with nothing to show for the hour they spend doing tricep rope extensions or machine chest flyes. So far you have been following their lead - but your apparently unhappy with it because you asked me what to do. If you don't want to be another Joe going through the motions then you will need a pen and a training journal... or even a piece of paper - you can't expect to simply remember it all... trust me. Also, use compound free weight movements in a progressive fasion. Work your entire body a few times per week for the next two months and then I can help you stagger your workout split some more.

HIM: Should I do arms only today?
ME: People underestimate the power of full body training - especially for those new to lifting. Over the next two months, work your whole body within 45-60 minutes or split it up with lower and upper body training days. Don't isolate too much too soon... that's for later on.

HIM: So what should I use?
ME: Free weights. Bench Press, Military Front Press, Curls, Dips, Pull ups... and so forth.

HIM: (Walks over to the Hammer Strength Bench Press)
ME: Get your ass off that for now... go lie down on the flat bench press and start building up your strength there. Don't get distracted by what you can or can't do today - focus on laying that foundation so you can train heavier later.

HIM: (Walks over to the Military Front Press and throws a few 45's on it).
ME: If you warm up with 135 pounds on this today - what do you expect to be lifting in 6 months? Come on dude, that ain't too far off from your max flat press strength... take some weight off and build yourself up.

    HIM: Thanks for your help.
ME: Just remember - when you come in here to lift... it's just you and your log book. Always organize your gym time, diet and rest so that you are able to keep making some improvements.

He has been sticking to this for awhile now... that isn't always common though. When someone asked me recently about my cutting diet they said, "sounds too complicated." Well no sh!t it's complicated... and it's down right uncomfortable at times. Some people have what it takes to get results - many don't. I'll spend time talking iron with someone who is genuinely niterested... otherwise I'm to busy for the BS...

My personal experience with people asking questions like that, is that they feel they do something actively about their problems when the ask these questions.
The sad thing is that after you have spent your time answering their questions, they nod at you and go back to their office to continue their doughnut munching and forget all about it.

Hell, everyone over the age of 12 should have at least a basic knowledge of what is healthy and what is not, and most do. Even all the commercials being thrown in our face can't convince people that icecream or coca cola is healthy - people make a choice, concious or otherwise, and when they put all that junk in their mouths they do know deep inside that it isn't good for them. It is all about priorities, and obviously being in shape simply isn't at the top of the list for most people.

If people ask me I always do my best to answere there question. Doesnt matter to me if it means my workout ends beeing 5 minutes longer than planned. Im never in a rush.
People have always helped me so its up to me to return the favor.

One thing that I notice in the gyms around here that is quite funny is that the REALY huge guys are always very very plesant and nice to talk to. They always do there best to help out, give advice. They also always have the most relaxed attitude to the whole gym thing.
The rude ones are the ones that look like they workout but arent huge yet. Those fit the meathead profile pefectly(when it comes to personality bias).

Since I belong to the "look like I workout but far from huge" group I want to break that fashion and help whenever I can
