    Calling all Sales Reps

I am looking for a bit of advice from some of those that have been in B2B sales...newbs and experienced alike.

I recently left retail sales to move into B2B sales. My goal was outside sales (and eventually pharm sales), but most companies will start you on inside sales and then promote you. (I have no prob with this, I know you have to eat poop for a while.)

I ended up finding a mechant services company that has allowed me to go right into outside sales. Great, right? But man in the last several months I've questioned my decision alot. The company's not bad, but the mercant service business kinda sucks...We're a dime a dozen, and we seem to be hated more than bible salesmen. I know things are going to suck in the beginning, but I'm just not sure if time is going to fix certain things.

I don't know, I guess I'm just looking to hear from people that are in sales and how they got started.

I've even considered that as well. If I can get into a car company that I feel passionate about, I think I would be successful.

Sales is a TOUGH job these days. The main reason is many employers will simply hire you with false promises because they will make you a 1099 employee, ie a contractor, rather than a w2 employee. Long story short, they don't pay you or give you benefits unless you make $$. So 90% of the time you go in all fired up, try to sell to your family and friends, get discouraged, quit, meanwhile the company now has all your leads and has paid you squat.

Pharm sales is TOUGH man, very tough. Sales is simply a numbers game. be prepared to contact as many people as you can, and find out of the box ways to get in touch with people and have them remember you. You must be organized to keep track of all potential clients, when you contacted them, when you should contact them again, etc.

If you wanna start off easy, try looking for a slary based sales job with commission. I work for Countrywide Home Loans, and I get 24K base plus commission, they give me benefits, overtime, expense account, and leads! Very cush job, I love it!

Check www.fullspectrumlending.com, we are always looking for hungry salesmen.

    Good luck bro

    Phreak,
Thanks for the help. I actually forgot to mention that I was also very fortunate to find a co. that was willing to give me salary. The problem with that is I'm constantly worried about KEEPING my job...See someone up there is going to get antsy if they're paying me and my numbers aren't where they shoudl be.

I sold insurance for Fords. We were very overpriced so we had to sell based on the FABs (features and benefits). I used to quite like it until they made some ethical selling policy we had to adhere too. my favourite close was "have you got a credit card there?" but after rule changes I had to speak a load of shit about how they could withdraw in 14 days and have time to reconsider blah blah.

i just sold my company to a larger one, sales is sales, you either have a product people want, and you are able to give it to them.. or not..

IT sales here start anywhere $48,000 + 10% of gross profit...

specialize, and you can do $96,000 + override of all services, but you have to supervise, motivate and create marketing programs..

thats me in a nutshell.. Starting yet another company in March, this time with my wife..

My co. will pay residuals, commission, and equipment margin...if I move to the comm. only plan. Unfortuantly, I wouldn't be paying rent either.

We're an ISO, so we can call on any processor. Mainly what we do is undercut to some degree....But we are also a little better at cust. service than most companies.

So I sell on the service aspect, while saving them money...

My bro is in IT sales...and doing very well. He also explained to me that it sucks in the beginning.

But he was an IT guy to begin with for almost 10 years. I was never a "bankcard guy"...I was a "supplement guy" hahah.

I can get 20 yr olds that drink beer all day to buy $40 vitamins...Does that count for anything?

    Sure,

I started out at Merchant Commerce as an inside sales rep selling merchant accounts. While I was there I used my time to learn the industry in and out. I learned the equipment side, leasing side and all of the fees. I worked there for about two years and then switched to First Data which is a big processor but this time worked outside sales. I liked both to a certain degree, inside because I was able to call on more people and outside because of the freedom and scenery changes (which can be a downfall to some).

I'm a sales rep for a liquor distribution company. I love my job because I sell a product that my customers need and want. They need me as much as I need them. There are only to distributors in the state and we by far dominate our competitor with brands and volume.
I started out in the bar/nightclub industry for about 10 years. The problem now is that I am pretty much stuck in the "industry" for the long haul. For some reason other businesses don't see selling booze as a real sales job.
I'm an idea guy so I have lots of ideas for new businesses to start but I don't have any money.....lol

I was going to leave sales because people are arrogant assholes. I've been through it all, but I toughed it out another few months, and eventually got the job offer I was waiting for. Post your resume on careerbuilder or monster, and the job offers will come faster than you can say winny tastes good.

Hahah...I'm pretty sure First Data was the reason we became an ISO.

It goes both ways. I've had quite a few of the more weathly business owners just be more than happy to talk to me and be polite. And I've had some not so nice businesses (shitholes) with owners that are missing most of their teeth telling me to get lost...

Lesson learned: You can NEVER judge your client.

True. The wealthy ones aren't using nasty like cursing or name calling. But they talk down to you. Very demeaning.
