Thread: Splenda Question

    Splenda Question

I was under the impression that Splenda did not cause in insulin spike especially since the box says "Suitable for people with diabetes." However, the ingredients listed are: dextrose, maltodextrin, and sucralose, in that order. Doesn't dextrose and maltodextrin cause an insulin response? How can this be explained then--is there simply not enough dextrin/malto per serving to cause one? But since they're listed first they must be the majority of the ingredients with sucralose (the actual chemical name of Splenda) having the least percentage in the product.

My wife and I use about 250 packets per week. I usually have about 25-30 each day myself.

The question was, HOW can it NOT when it contains both dextrose and maltodextrin? Per one gram of splenda there is 12 mg of sucralose....so the rest is made up of dextrose/malto...so if you use tons of it, say on your oats, how does it not cause an insulin response?

Same hereI tell my wife when she goes in to BP to get her vanilla coffee to grab me a hand full of the splenda. It is $$$$$$ I bought a box of it and it is really light and fluffy almost doesnt seem like the is any in it.

That's exactly my question. Which no one seems to be able to answer.

I asked this a while back and no one had a response either.

I think it DOES have an insulin response.

    How can it not?

Sucralose alone (as used in diet drinks) would have no effect on blood sugar... but i think in the amounts we consume (in the packeted form: dex; malto) there'll be an insulin response.

My previous coach told me to drop it pre-contest... And i still do in the latter stages.

im pretty sure one packet has slightly less than 1g of sugar and about 3 calories. so in excess it probably wouldnt be good.

^^ Thing is.. who uses just one pack?

w/ oats i use 4-6 packs. I know the fiber per serving of oats will curtail the sugar spike... but what about between meals when i have coffee w/ 4-6 packs... etc.

    It's sure to add up.

Not sure how significantly.. but to say there's no BG effect i'm sure is a fallacy.

You are one crazy mofo. 4-6 packets, just drink your coffee black like a real man

The most I use at once is 3 with my breakfast oats and egg whites mixed up. You guys have a sweet tooth huh...

it doesnt cause an insulin spike because it is bonded with some chemical that causes the splenda packet to pass through the body without being digested, thats what i learned in my nutrition class anyways so im almost pos its right.....

I do not like the ingredients I think that it will cause a spike so I use "perfect sweet" which is xytol.

I know that sucralose, which started out as sugar, is chemically alterted to "pass through the body without being digested" as you said, but as far as the "packet" being altered, I'm not sure that's correct. I read nothing that says that the dextrose or maltodextrin is altered in any way.

Can I buy Splenda as sucralose alone without the dextrin and maltodextrose?

I have used both precontest and have been fine.

One thing I have learned is that usually our daily activity off sets the small amount of calories from things like splenda. Hell even coffee has small amounts of calories, but the elevation in heart rate off sets that.

For example...I usually go up and down stairs 5 or 6 times a day at my gym and also I always fidget while I'm sitting which all burns a small amount of calories. Supposedly people that fidget, go up and down stairs, and chew gum burn around 100 extra calories in a 24 hour period, this is usually enough to off set splenda fillers. However, during a contest diet this is different because I am looking for optimal fat burn. For you non contest dieters though I would not worry so much about the fillers in splenda. If you do see the above sites.

But being able to offset the calories from the Splenda is different than not having the splenda cause an insulin response, correct?

Although controlling insulin is a big part of dieting, I still am a firm believer that if you burn more calories then you take in then you will not store bodyfat in access if your diet is in check and your pro/carb/fat ratios are correct. In other words I haven't really worried about the insulin response from splenda because I know exactly how many calories I take in each day so I keep lean year round.

I've often wondered if it was detrimental to consume splenda with my morning coffee pre cardio. I don't really care about the rest of the day nor am I concerned about the small amount of extra cals. I just wonder if it's creating enough of an insulin response to hurt my AM cardio. I haven't really been able to find an answer, so I dropped it.
