I also think it might have something to do with the cache. When big boards loose their files, they usually will have to clear the cache before opening back up. The cache represents about 45% of the traffic (from my experience). The server has to rebuild its cache, putting more stress on the server than normal, more bandwith, more of the processor/ram than normal. Give it time, it'll speed up.
