no its not...i was driving my truck which was uninsured and unregistered and fell asleep and hit a pole. my license was suspended at the time and i didnt know it. i went to court and my lawer got all charges droped. in the end all i had to do was pay court fees and probation fees...6 months left of probation.Originally Posted by rana173

o shit i joined the Marine Corps in july and im still not done with training but so far it sucks cause ur away from home. But isn't that the whole point?? Well it was for me until u meet a girl and you cant see her. And you cant even meet new girls. But I would suggest going to college unless you want to do a career in the Marine Corps.

Part of being in the military is working your ass off and being away from home. Being a married man in the military can be very difficult. If you are single going into the military I suggest stay single and enjoy your travels. You will look back on this experience and realize that you just might have had one of the best times in the world. You will do things that people could only image. Make the best of it and enjoy it.

Good luck importeater. It is a serious decision in this day and age, knowing that as a Marine you will probably be seeing combat as soon as you finish your training. You would think it would be understood but it was amazing after Iraq started how many active and reserves started complaining that it wasn't what they signed up for.
WRT your record, you can get in with those charges, as long as you are not on probation when you enter. Thankfully you don't have a felony nor a weapon's charge. Is your DL situation resolved? When you apply for any special programs (recon, SEALS, EOD, etc) you will have to go through a screening process. The first thing they do is run your Police record and credit report. Make sure you know what is there so you aren't suprised. Make sure you have copies of all your court paperwork on hand because if you need a clearance at any point, you will need them. Save yourself the pain later down the road and have your documentation ready.
I seriously encourage you to think long and hard before you choose the military. Of course you can always find a way out if you aren't feeling you belong there...but it can have a detrimental effect on your future employment depending on how you get out. I think it's a great opportunity for young people. You have great opportunites to travel, get educated and mature. But for what you get, of course there is a trade off. It is not an easy life at times.
In case you are wondering, I just retired after 22 yrs in the Navy and I've been forward deployed to the Middle East twice.

my DL situation is resolved. i have it back. which court papers should i make copies of? the ones saying that im off of probation?
i have been thinking about this constantly. im sure most of its not kicking in yet, being away from home, being over seas, all of the work. im sure there are gonna be some times that it sucks being in there, but when i get older and look back on it im sure i will be happy on the decision that i have made. with all of the traveling, people that i meet, and the whole experience. i have friends that are in the military, and they say it gets really hard at times but glad they got to experience everything that they have been through. im still thinking about it and i appreciate everyones help

Keep the ones that show that the charges were dropped and then your release from probation. I have no regrets about my service and have had wonderful experiences. Met great people, seen amazing things and all that. Being away from home the first time can be hard, but I'm sure you'll make friends fast and before long you'll be in full swing. i went to talk to the army and marines guys today. i talked to the army guy first and he answered some of the questions that i had. i asked him about my probation and because its unsupervised, all i have to do is pay off all of my fines and i should be able to leave before my probation is up. the army guy seemed like he was slinging the BS saying things i want to hear. i took the pre test and i didnt do too good but not to bad either. i scored a 37. is there any thing online that i can practice to help me get a better score for when i take the actual test? when i got done talking to the army guy i went and talked to the marine guy. he seemed pretty straight forward from the little time that i talked with him. about my probation situation he said that its not problem and that they could probably take care of the fines that i owe. another my concerns were my truck payment and credit card payment, and he said that i they could give me a paper that i give to those company's and they will freeze my accounts while i am in boot camp. can they really do that or is he just telling me BS?
EDIT: im going to talk to the marine guy tomorrow. i just walked in and he had plans already so im gonna get more info from him when i see him tomorrow nite

Recruiters are like car salesmen. They will say anything to make a sale, their livelihood depends on it. Recruiting is no different. Research, veryify and get EVERYTHING in WRITING!
As far as the ASVAB, there are books available to help you with that. If you don't want to buy them, try the library. Also try checking out some of the used book sales sites like half.com, etc and see if you can find some there. Read through these, do the practice tests, read other books that cover the same topics as on your test. Im sure there also some websites on line that will have info and practice exams for a fee. The better you do on the ASVAB the more opportunities that are available to you. Once you get in if you want to apply for certain programs you need a certain ASVAB score. You can retake it but if you do worse, you are stuck with that score. The military also has classes you can take once you are in that can help you improve those skills as well.
As far as the creditors.....I'm not sure about that. I'm sure that they would be willing to work with you. Once you are in the military your paycheck is direct deposited to the account of your choice and they know you are more likely to pay your bills with a regular reliable income.
I would talk to your bank and other creditors to be sure.

Well dude did you stay with this girl i have been in for 4 years and some change on an extension. I like the marine corp just not some of the retards in it. If you join now you will be deployed half my marine corp enlistment has been over here in iraq my first deployment was to fallujah second to habbaniyah but shit i would take it over being in lejuene any day. Its a good experience but you have to really have to like it to stay in and i dont i only extended to come back to iraq for another year wierd huh. If you do, do it dont wait do it early.ever since i was 17 i wanted to join the marines. i was all signed up and almost all through the process and i back out of it at the last min because i met a girl..stupid i know

when i was 17 i was gonna go in. in the middle of the process i met this girl and we hit it off pritty quickly. so i backed out of it. 1.5 yrs -2 yrs later we broke up. so now its 6 years from when i was gonna join the first time (im 23 now). i thought about it ever since then, so im gonna join now while im still young and when i get out ill still be in my 20's. being deplayed doesnt really bother me. maybe it just hasnt sunk in on what its exactly likebut it will be an experience that ill never forget. whats your job in there? i havent decided on what i would like to do yet exactly. but then again ihavent taken the test yet either

Dizz I think you were talking about Force Recon for this. Regular Recon you can take the physical assessment test while you are at the end of ITB(Infantry Training Batallion). I know that Force Recon wants you to go on at least a couple of deployments with Recon before you can be considered for acceptance to Force.

You may have misunderstood me. Camp Lejeune is the Marine Corps base located in Jacksonville, NC. It is just a sh-t town with nothing but even sh-ttier strip clubs, run down bars, and tattoo and barber shops. I would rather be stationed anywhere besides Lejeune.

If you get the smart idea to head to the surrounding cities Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Emerald Island etc. to maybe find more fertile ground, You'll be lucky to even get into the clubs/bars there. NC/SC clubs have the ability to be "Members only" but they only exercise this right when they see you roll up with your military haircut, military ID, rollin dude deep or just otherwise suspect you being in the military. There are a couple places that will let you in but the girls are absolute trash.
However, if all you care about is going out with your buddies and gettin trashed, there are plenty of good places to go in Jacksonville. Logan's has some of the strongest drinks I have yet to encounter again with their "Roadhouse Ice teas", I suggest getting a couple and then calling a cab. The Marina used to be cool back in 2000 but now trash hangs out there and there's always clouds of Mase in the air from the douche bag lookin owner that carries it around on his hip like he's some cowboy. Fast freddy's is a good pool hall, cheap pitchers and plenty of tables. La Mirage has some of the better lookin strippers you can abuse but still no place I would want to go without a pitcher or two in me. Tarheels is a decent country bar, some of the better lookin girls hang out there. I think that would be your best bet to findin a lady in the area.
Anyway, this about sums it up. Need to know more about this hell hole, PM me

But to answer you about duty station....yes you have some say so about where you will go. I believe after your MOS training they will ask if you prefer East Coast(Lejeune most likely but maybe Cherry Point), West Coast(Pendleton Most likely but maybe San Diego or Miramar if you are lucky as hell) or overseas(Okinawa). But in all actuality the Marine Corps will stick you wherever the hell they need you. If you re-enlist one of your incentives will be duty station and you can pick much cooler places.

importeater...I did the same thing as you and joined at 23. I actually turned 24 in boot camp. Did I love the Corps while I was in not externally and most Marines don't but inside in gave me a great sense of pride and direction. I served 5 yrs. That's what I signed up for and knew when I signed that was all I was going to do. My saying to my Co. Gunny during the reenlistment barrage what that "you couldn't give me a millions bucks to reenlist, but I wouldn't take 5 million bucks for the experience of being a Marine." I will never regret joining and it one of the most positive influences I've had in my life. I'm 40 btw now and just today someone sent me a utube clip of the USMC Silent Drill team and it sent chills down my spine.
My advice: make sure you are really committed to being a Marine because once you go in and especially if you do joint forces ops, you will find you are expected to do more with older and less equipment. You are not always appreciated by others for this especially in towns around base.
Don't go in with any unrealistic glamorous expectations. Most of the time it is monotinous and a real pain in the ass. The Corps is very anal about the smallest things...all the time...especially when you are in garrison.
If you do decide to join, don't cut the experience short...volunteer for everything that gets you out of garrison. It is very easy to just skate by, do your time, and just be another cami uniform. You joined the Marines...go for it.
Be aware that Marines die all the time in places no one even knows the US has deployed to. you will be very surprised in boot camp history courses at all the small "conflicts" that you have never ever heard of where Marines stayed for years and died by the thousands.
I heard you talk about your girl...here is a very common occurence: Guy goes into boot camp single and planning on staying that. He gets to boot camp and finds out how fragile the human life is. He listens to DI's telling him CONSTANTLY that jodie is banging the shit outta his girl back home. He writes lettter in boot camp professing love to said sweetheart and ends up getting married on boot leave. Works out fine for some but others it is a disaster. Deploying to far off places is a bitch with a wife and kiddos waving by at the airport. I don't see how those guys even do it now that I have a wife and kids of my own.

Drop your skirt and join already! You will regret it if you don't. I just finished my 8 year contract with the Corps and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. It will be challenging, but rewarding.
What ever you do!!!!!!!!!!!! Leave for bootcamp as a single man and stay single for the first two years. I am not saying you can't bed and chicks but don't have a relationship. It will be much easrier for you! Believe that!

I joined at 22 import so I don't want you to be worried about you being 23. Honestly that was a concern for me also when I joined in 2002. But we had one guy in our platoon that was 29 and there were still a handful of guys that were 25 and 26. So don't be worried about that. If anything use it to your advantage because you are going to be more mature then the rest of the 18 and 19 year old kids in there so try and be a leader. If you are the guide for graduation you should get meritoriously promoted. But you also have to put up with alot of sh-t from the DI's if you are a guide or a squadleader....don't get your feelings if you get fired...I think my platoon went through 5 guides and like 16 squadleaders. Anyways if you want to do it...join. You are still young bro. I have been our for almost 2 years now but I just recently got recalled and I am supposed to receive orders this month and have to report in May. I am not happy about that and I am trying to get out of having to go back in but that doesn't mean that I didn't love being a Marine. But I am just ready to get on with the rest of my life and being a Marine was a great chapter of my life that I will always have with me but I am ready to move past that. Unfortunately when you sign up you sign for 4 active and 4 inactive.

i am i just finnished all the paper work tonight and im going into boston tomorrow to take the test. im staying the night at a hotel and there gona wake me up early and piss test me and start with the interviewing and then hopfuly get sworn in and get a date when im going to boot camp or around that time

Like southmade said use your maturity to your advantage don't take the DI games personal, just enjoy it while your there. Some of the younger guys will be pissing their pants b/c they have never left the wing of their mom and dad. Just take a breath and remember it's all a mind game....but do learn b/c like someone said in this thread earlier you will prob deploy shortly after MCT or schools....Good Luck Marine....keep us posted.

im in college right now and plan to graduate. ive talked to a recruiter about OCS and possibly becoming an officer, but i met a marine the other night and he said i should go enlisted when i graduate. what do you guys think is the better route to go? im also still wondering whether to go reserve or active.

whats the OCS? is that the coast guard? with the reserves you can still get deployed at any time they need you. since your gonna be graduating from college you will be uped one on the pay scale so you will be making alittle more than everyone else in there with you

Why the hell would your friend tell you to go enlisted?? The Corps needs better officers in it and better leaders. If you go to OCS you get weekends off to get your mind right again. Not to mention that once you get out of OCS you are treated as an adult as opposed to enlisted that have to go through MCT/ITB and then MOS school and are still treated like children. And then on top of everything you get better pay, better living quarters, and more privileges.
Now me personally I am glad I went enlisted just because I think most officers are douche bags and I couldn't see myself actually hanging out with them. ALso I didn't have my college diploma so I didn't have that option.

Import are you sure you have talked with the recruiters in the Marine Corps?? THey should have told you about OCS and if you have at least 15 hrs of college credits that will get you promoted to a PFC out of boot camp right there. Which believe it or not you make a good bit more than a private. OCS is Officer Candidate School and you have to have a college degree to go into it.

yeah im with you there on the benefits and everything, but i kinda feel like i want the grunt experience first. sounds stupid, but i kinda feel like getting my ass kicked and getting bitched at all the time would do me some good, cuz ive had a pretty cushy life so far. i dont know, maybe its a dumbass way to think about it.
