keep in mind i was a raw competition lifter for years(just switched to equiped in the last 2 years) i very rarely would go over 80% with full motion movements unless i had a contest. i would get used to heavier weights when i would do board presses, lockouts and partial squats and rack deads. when a contest would come up i would drop all the heavy auxillary movements and focus on doubles or singles at 85-95% for a wk or 2, than i would do a deload week and use 50% for all core lifts 3 sets of 3 reps and do no auxillary work at all. the following wk would be the contest wk, i wouldnt lift this wk until meet day and than i would go all out.
the range my working sets for the core lifts was
55-65% 5-6 sets of 5reps( this is what i stuck with the majority of the time. at least 3 -4wks before i would go up to higher percents)
70-75% 4-5 sets of 3-5 reps( 2- wks)
80-85% 3- 4 sets of 2-3 reps(2 wks)
90%-95% 1-2 sets of 1-2 reps( i would only go this heavy if i had a contest coming up and i would only do it for one wk. if i didnt have a contest i would go back to the lower percents and start the program over.
i myself would not ever go over 90% on the squat or dead, i found using 91%-95%, i would leave my best lifts in the gym when it came time for the contest, the only time i would go over 90% was if i could triple it and it felt light, which was just about never!lol! the press i would work up to 95% and i was always fine.
