I do have a problem with government getting involved with religion. The WORD marriage has very specific legal benefits/liabilities. For thousands of years, marriage has been a religious event. It is still a religious event today for many Americans.

You don't need a bar mitzvah license or a baptism license, so why do you need a marriage license?

I don't think that the WORD marriage should have any legal meaning because it is a religious event.

As far a I am concerned, churches get to decide if people can get married. Some churches have been marrying gay people for quite some time. Not sure how the government gets to override god for those people.
Word baby! Of course by getting involved they get to have extra control over us and charge us for the privelege of being controlled in this manner and then make a bunch of rules like in the tax codes and whatnot.

I think government should have nothing to do with marriage.

In fact I think that governments are inherently evil and should all be aboloshed and replaced by societies based on voluntary associations between people (and I'm not crazy, I realize if govt disappeared tomorrow there would be chaos. But govt today creates a ton of chaos. In fact governments have killed more of their own citizens in the 20th century than all the poeple killed in wars over that same time period, so govt ain't no peach neither).
