Cool. Actually the GC can have two different detection methods at the end... UV/Vis is okay, but MS (mass spectrometer) is the best. Because it can compare the molecular fragments to known patterns (or if you really know MS you can look at the fragments masses yourself and largely determine what it is). Can you tell me what model GC you have? Perkin Elmer? Determining structure would be pretty hard with just IR and UV/Vis. You'd probably need NMR too. MS is the best.
