Perhaps the story of creation is being taken to literally as it's written in the bible. Maybe the true story of the complexity of God's creation would have been too much for people to understand at the initial time of the bible.
The bottom line is I don't think it's nessicary to accept creationism to be a person of faith. I take issue with creationism and the denial of science, not the religion as a whole. It's a "the world is flat" theory imo.
