The technique of hand warming and gentle mixing is actually something I learned from the insulin days (my mother was diabetic). I'm happy to defer to Mike's expertise on this issue.

Maybe it's just a psychological thing with me - kind of like "be nice to your 'roids and they'll be nice to you."

As for the maracas, that actually might be appropriate . . . for Mexican drugs.
