High school kid dies from bench press

A high school sports star who died lifting weights at his US home was discovered by his mum pinned under a bar.

Jake Pezon was bench-pressing a bar weighing 84kg alone in his basement on Wednesday night when, police suspect, the bar fell on his chest and he was unable to lift it off.

The 16-year-old's mother arrived at the home in the small town of Slinger, Wisconsin, shortly after midnight on Thursday and found her son unresponsive with the weights still on his chest, local media report.

Jake was known as an exceptional athlete at his local high school, playing for both the gridiron and wrestling teams.

Slinger High School gridiron coach Jeff Baker told FOX6 News he remembered Jake as a devoted athlete. He said he encouraged players to train at home but do so with a buddy.

"It's a very sad reminder to be safe when you do those types of things," he said.

"You just realize how fragile life is. One mistake, one slip — it can be that simple.

School district administrator Bob Reynolds described the teen as an "all-around nice kid, a hard worker".

Police are waiting for an autopsy to determine an official cause of death.

Thats really weird I have no idea how the hell he would die from that unless it knocked him out when it fell somehow then rolled onto his neck and
    strangled him lol.
But I've had more than 1 time where I've dropped my max w/out a spot, and it was always fairly easy to just roll off my chest onto my abdomen
at which point you put your hand over your nutts and roll off your knees.
I know people who don't lift might think this is common but something else had to be going on for the kid to actually die.

Could've dropped and collapsed one or both of his lungs. Let's just hope nobody finds steroids in his home or that will be blamed for his death.

No shit here bro. But he was benching 185, hopefully steroids were not involved lol. The first thing I thought was exactly what Bojangles said, roll the weight off.

This is sad. Had a gym teacher in high school die in his garage lifting 500lbs without a spot. Apparently his wrist broke during the lift and it came down and crushed his chest. Was a great guy too which made it all the more sad.

I always use my squat rack to bench when I'm by myself. It'll spot the bar right at my chest. I always envision this type of stuff when working out alone. Now, actually, I pretty much just use DB's.

yah...it was a weird flick...but it's an actual common accidental death. My friend killed himself because his gf accidentally strangled herself. She tied something to a door knob...so I'm just saying....it's a possibility

The barbell probably rolled down on his throat and killed him. It most likely crushed his neck since we are talking about 84kg. I doubt it just crashed at free fall speed on his chest. He must have put some resistance on it.

My thoughts go out to the family!

We all, at some stage, have dropped the bar with the max weight it . . right ?
i know i have, once, really scary moment to be honest, however i rolled it down my chest and was able to sit up and take it off. No harm done.

Real nice. Rag on the dead 16 yr old. Get some brains, and learn some respect.

I hope somehow the kids mother can find peace in such a horrific loss. So sad.

I had a similar experience. It was about three years ago. I was lifting more heavy then usual and I was working out alone in my buildings basement (It was incredibly hot down there). So like the dick I was, I tried to go all out with my increased bench press without a spot. I dropped it on my chest and rolled it down to my stomach out of fear of it rolling down on my neck. It left a scar on my abdominal region for about two weeks.

Oh I forgot 16 year old kids are known for intelligent thought process without the full development of their frontal lobe. I wasnt saying it wasnt sad, nor did I "rag bruh"

Theres a number of ways the weight could have killed him. One, the weight was heavy enough to keep his diaphram compressed and therefore he suffocated from not being able to inflate his lungs. Two, the weight struck his chest causing his heart to stop. A hard enough blow to the chest can cause your heart to stop, and this is the reason catchers wear chest plates. I'd be interested in the autopsy. It could also have happened that he had an aortal hemorrhage, or a heart attack, while lifting, and the bar dropped onto his chest as a result of going unconcious because of massive internal bleeding, etc.

    I like this.
I study anything I can, and one of the many areas I am fascinated with is the brain. It's amazing how much can be completely explained about behavior, attitude, aggression, social skills, etc once you learn about the brain on an in depth level. So many kids want to talk about how they are mature for their age, or how age is nothing but a number, etc. They want to find some way to convince themselves that they are already at the same level an adult is at. The fact is, the frontal lobe does not fully develop until the early 20's. The frontal lobe is used for judgment and critical thinking. Because the frontal lobe is not fully developed in kids or teens, their mind compensates by using the hypothalamus (if I remember correctly, don't have my notes near me) which is the part of the brain that deals with emotions. This is why teens make such stupid decisions that are usually based in emotion rather than in common sense or facts. Or why teens seem to get so over dramatic about every little thing. Or the suicide rate is highest in teens than in any other age group.

Bottom line is, this is a teen, because he is a teen his frontal lobe is under developed. This means that i could take a wild guess and say that the kid wanted to be bigger and stonger so bad that he let it get the best of him and made the stupid, emotionally driven decision to lift alone in a basement with no spotter.

I am sad for the kid, I wish he didn't have to die, would have been much better for him to have hurt himself and lived to learn a valuable lesson. I feel bad for his family, friends, etc. I am not the "politically correct" type, though. The fact is, it was a stupid decision to make. The fact is, he was 16. The fact is, the kid died. So this means, whether it "sounds nice" or not, what happened was in fact a result of the stupidity of a kid. That's just how it is. Sad, but true.

.......What?!! First you make a blind assumption the kid had clips on the bar then you referenced him as stupid, "bruh." The kids dead. And I don't like to hear a smart a$$ remark talking about how stupid you ASSUME he is. Shallow and ill timed. Show respect!

Dear lord....you can dissect this as much as you like, POINT IS.....in the unfortunate DEATH of a young man......IT'S BEST and a little more APPROPRIATE as well as COMPASSIONATE to not reference his DEATH as "STUPIDITY of a kid." PERIOD!!!!

kids stupidity meant I was referring to kids are stupid, if you think 16 year old boys are smart then good for you. Also if you read it I said stupidity of A KID, not this kid is stupid, not he's stupid, but a broader statement. clearly you don't know what a blind assumption is when I used the word IF he used clips, had I said he used clips I'm sure and couldnt get the weight off, then yea you would be right.

    Or this

My bench is set up so that if i fail it lands on the spot rails. Naturally the natural curve in my back and flaringof mu chest alows me to sit higher then just laying on the bench. SO if it does fall 150kg wont crush me.

    Safety first!
