This isn't necessarily a black thing, but a hood/family thing. Many hispanics feel the same way. Its inate in the black community to stay close to home and take care of your Mom and everyone else. The mentality of leaving the hood you grew up shows you don't care about where you are from. Its a feeling that if you leave, you've sold out. The buying of cars and flashy jewelry is no difference then white people buying the latest, greatest, tv set, or riding lawn mower. They are status symbols. The better the car, the more status you have in the neighborhood. Not saying its right, but that's the mentality.
