I had a revelation about race a few years ago when I started eating at a soul food place where the cliental is primarily black. I love eating there and would take friends who were caught off guard. After eating they would all say something like "I was nervous the whole time, I didn't know what I could say." I always responded with "just be yourself, the worst that can happen is you find out you are a racist *sshole." Then I would laugh and say "you have never gone anywhere where you were the minority, right?" People have no idea how oppressive it is.
It is easy for people in the majority to say they don't care about race. What they mean is, they are comfortable not thinking about race. But, when they are in a situation where race IS a factor, well, they find they DO care, and they ARE uncomfortable. I think everyone should go through that.

I was born in Oakland Calif, and raised in the bay area. we had more or less, all races present, with maybe a few exceptions (I'm thinking Vulcan?). One of my jobs years ago was bill collector / repo man out in the ghetto. Fun job.
anyways, there are some excellent BBQ places I always make a point of going to when I pass through the bay area. So if you've heard of this, you know how good these places are...
I'm thinking of two... Flints, and Everett & Jones.....

I experienced that same kinda thing when I was a teenager and moved to Vegas for a few years. I went to a North Las Vegas High school that was 90% blacks . Since your from vegas I went to school with all the kids that lived around martin luther king and carey area. That is not a easy part of town to be one of the only white kids at their school, lol

Ive never though about it like that but it makes a lot of sense and you are right. I have to say I have always been a little like some of your fiends you describe but it does not seem to matter in regards to race. it's more going into any bar, restaurant or some place I am not use to or may be seen as the outsider and be put in the situation where I have to have a conversation with someone or a group. Maybe it's more of anxiety?
But to contradict myself I force myself into such situations. Every time I have gone to Mexico I get off the beaten track and would walks for hours through back street town and neighborhoods. When I go to Thailand or Philippines I do the same. I do the typical tourist stuff with friends but when I'm alone I go out into the neighborhoods and places where tourist dont go. I frequently meet people, talk and make new friends even though when I start out I feel nervous about it. Even now talking about it I can feel my pulse race. LOL

My opinion on the original post is 2 sided. I think the preacher need to be help to some level of responsibility because I believe; and if it can be proven that he knew or suspected that by burning the Koran that it would cause an uprising and people may die then he is guilty to some degree. Not of Murder but of???
I also believe anyone who killed someone else be it anger, things getting out of control or mob mentality should be held responsible and charged with Homicide as well as the religious leader who got these guys stirred up.
Someone said the same thing would happen if it was the Bible. Yes there has been wars in the past over the Bible and Christianity but not for a long time. The bible has been burned many time recently and over the past 100 year without anyone being killed over it. Interesting how every point someone makes they have to say "i have black friends", it's okay! All of us are pretty tollerant when we look at things, so no one needs reiterate how tollerant or liberal they are by stating how many ethnic/minority friends they have, then thinking that's okay to then to state their point! Do they really think they are more validated in this sense?
Times Roman makes some very valid points. Political Correctness is ridiculous these days, and people will find any reason to justify their sense of self loathing, i'm just not sure the way the point was made was well structured. Johnny Vegas previous post in this thread knocks the nail on the head perfectly.
It's easy, very easy to say that "oh i'm not bothered by this" or "im not bothered by that", and those things are very easy to say if you're a straight, white male. But when the shoe is on the other foot, it's not so easy to state those things, if you're put in a certain situation. Everything in life is subjective and people can have all the opinions in the world, but until they are put in a situation, they cannot say with 100% guarantee how they'll react.
It's also easy to say "oh im sick of this minority group complaining about this, i'm white/straight/male and im sick of it being okay for one group and not mine", and that just turns into a divide and conqueor scenario. The point is, white straight males have never had it bad in the past.
Fortunately today, we live in a world where most the time, everyone is equal, or considered equal. I do think people need to move on and I do think past injustices shouldnt be used as an advantage to be given to an individual living in the now.

When I lived in NYC, I was the only white kid in Washington Heights (Upper Manhattan) for 10 years. Washington Heights is entirely hispanic, and like 10% African American, and 0.1% White (Me, lol). And I always had trouble walking around because even though I never had ANY problem with anyone, you feel like the black sheep. Its just something that is in your mind all the time and you hate being singled out. But, I am very excited now since I know how the minorities feel and I can honestly say that they all accepted me and almost all my buddies are Hispanic people or African Americans. They are cool people with a great humor. I don't know why but I connect more with Hispanic's then with White people that i met when I was living in the states.
Its a complex, you feel bad being the minority, nobody has to even say anything negative to you, but you just happen to feel it not out of hate or anything but out of curiosity of what people may think.

I don't know any black people who say this... While some parts of your post are correct, others are way off base. Especially the statement about it being easier to sell drugs than take advantage of government educational programs. And let me explain to you something about the slave reparations suits: Jews have won reparations against the German government for Hitler's evils (pushed through with tremendous support from the US government). The Japanese have won reparations for the internment camps they were put in during WWII. So while the majority of blacks don't support the reparations causes, is it so far fetched to believe that such a case isn't out of the realm of possibility?
And CAN WE PLEASE STOP THIS SH*T ABOUT BLACKS LOOKING FOR HANDOUTS!!! This is a complete load of crap. Roughly 17% of blacks live below the poverty line. But I can guarantee the vast majority of those want to move out of those circumstances. While many people abuse the welfare system people aren't happy living on these 'hand-outs'. Why because no one getting rich collecting welfare. Welfare doesn't pay all you bills. Its not a good lifestyle to live and if you believe people are happy living on it, why don't you talk to someone who is on it (black, white, latino, etc). You may find a few who are ok with it, but the overwhelming majority aren't.
Sorry for the rant fellas! This stuff is getting pretty ridiculous to me. I post on the 'ask the blackman' thread so people can have an opportunity to read and have some of these ridiculous stereotypes eliminated, but apparently some still believe in these issues.

I think most people have ideas about race based on hearsay. Many (most) of us have little experience dealing with people unlike ourselves. Sure, we might have a black friend, but odds are that he is our friend because he is LIKE us, not hugely different. We still fear or distrust the ones that are outside our comfort zone.
I learned another lesson (I am old, I have learned some lessons) when I was 22 and shaved my head. I was also in a punkrock phase and wearing Doc Martins. I started noticing that black women crossed the street when they saw me coming, and turning around when they were headed toward me in the grocery store aisle. It took me about a week to realize why, and I felt like a jerk. I stopped wearing the boots, made sure I always smiled and the problem went away.
I learned that people judge you by how you look, because they cannot figure out your character from a distance. We all have defenses, and use them to protect ourselves. Those defenses are very basic and rooted in ignorance. Defenses are good, but refining them is crucial to breaking out of our little worlds.

Most of the blacks i've known over the last 20 years were middle class, blue collar or professional, and enjoyed a fairly decent standard of living.
As far as handouts and welfare benefits, we have a trailer park in town back home, and I think everyone there is looking for "something for nothing". But... when I drive by, I see from time to time, an occassional black, but mostly what I see are whites and hispanics.
I was in Kentucky a year ago, and I was more than a little shocked to see the condition of the trailers (white) people were living in.... garbage strewn about the place, old wrecks of cars littering the yard, kids running around in the mud barefoot.....
This country is still a melting pot, which means there will be pockets of certain demographics sprinkled through out the country. Within those pockets, you will find ghettos. I'm sure many of you have lived or grew up in or near a ghetto? These ghettos will reflect the demographics of the communities around it, whether they be white, black, brown or purple.
So if your experience is that only mexicans live in ghettos, or whites, or whatever, then I would suggest that is probably a clue you haven't seen much of this country. yes, ghettos are full of people looking for handouts, but it would be faulty logic to suggest one demographic or another dominates the ghettos in this country.
