There is a perception that many athletes in college get preferential treatment from the faculty so they may continue playing without getting "graded out".

I don't know the statistic, I knew it once, but a majority of these athletes that specifically get recruited to play sports, a majority do NOT graduate at the end of four years.

Inner city kids get recruited by colleges to play ball. Some of these kids can barely read. But they make it through highschool somehow, then off to college.

And the ones that do graduate college, many of them have been guided on a path of least difficulty.

And before you guys get all twitchy and jump on me, I base this not only on personal observation and experience, but also my god parents, both their sons grew up and coached. One at a high school, the other at a university. They often told stories about how they had to nurse maid some of these guys, star players, and push these guys into some of the most remedial of courses, then stay on their asses just to pass that. this means school provided tutors, etc.

As a former highly recruited, blue chip, all american football player myself, that statement is ridiculous. You HAVE to have a course of study in college, even if it's just a university studies degree. No one can take all electives and graduate. You have to take "real" classes. And besides, Micheal Vick, when coming out of high school, was low on the top recruits list in the country (I believe he as listed in the 90's of the top 150 recruits). Virginia Tech isn't known as the one of the big money schools paying players (even though I'm sure Vick got "perks"). But you statement speaks of either ignorance or pure jealousy. And I've been to his football camps (I helped run the one in Vegas with him) and he's no dummy. I have first hand knowledge of this.

You're basing your beliefs off of personal observation. Well I can assure you that you're wrong. The reason: You only hear about the major colleges. There are 121 D1 colleges, more in D2, and then there's Div 3, etc. BCS schools have a graduation rate of about 60%. As a matter of fact, NCAA has rules about graduating athletes (I believe their standard is 40% minimum). Now I'm speaking for football. Its not all inner city kids who can't muster the grades, Times, athletes are passed through at all demographics. These stories of coddled athletes usually apply only to the 3-4 superstars on the teams of major colleges. Remember there are over 100 players on football scholarship at these schools so your perception is again, off base. Tutors provided to athletes are no different than the tutors provided to normal students. The only difference is that the school pays these tutors while the students pay the tutors themselves. And there is justification for that. The justification is scholarship athletes (full scholarships) aren't allowed to have jobs during the regular school year. So please fully educate yourself before making generalized comments on college athletes!

Athletes have gotten easy ass classes and preferential treatment for all the 4 colleges I have been to (including community colleges). I mean, many are really really dumb. Most people are too though. The only difference is the other people never got passing grades - except the occasional hot girl.

So I am actually getting this from personal experience AND two seperate coaches, one at high school and one at college. I have known both these coaches for years, and have heard their stories, both college football players themselves, but I have heard their stories for years as well.

Matter of fact, Brett was inducted into his college's hall of fame a few years ago, presented to him in the hospital, the day before he died.

So this isn't just me watching movies and mouthing off. I'm getting my information from a variety of sources.

You are taking this personally. I never said I was a spokesperson. Your words, not mine. I said based on personal experience, observation, and TWO football coaches, whom I know very well for many years, that have shared many experiences with me.

Your perspective is that of the student athlete (it seems, I could be wrong, it could be more than that too).

My perspective is that of a fellow classmate that has seen coaches dote on his star players.

My perspective is also that of a variety of other experiences.

Please do NOT take my comments as an attack on you. You may be the exception Star Student Athlete that was able to maintain a GPA over 3.00 AND graduate in the standard 4 years without a tutor being assigned by the school for every third or fourth class.

I took a powerlifting class in college once. football coach kicked me out of the class saying this class is ONLY for his football team. I checked with the front desk and they said , NO, that is incorrect. This is an open class for all students.

you say graduation rates, this means a 6 year window based on NCAA stats. I was looking at within 4years. How many do you think graduate in the standard 4 years? I would say much much lower.

In fact, I would be interested to see out of all those that do take the full 6 years to graduate, what percentage are athletes? Compared to this ratio...
