getting older isnt any fun !!

This getting older stinks! I know this the over 40 forum and I am Just old enough to be here let alone complain. Old time injuries are comming back in a big way.The list goes on and on. Busted ankles from playing ball. Bad knee from a car. 3 blown out disc in lower spine and a shoulder injury. Anyone with busted joints finding help from anything or have ideas let me know. Taking it easy is just leeding to being fatter and weak.

Hi wheelman welcome to the board! Getting older means getting wiser ..... that is training wiser. You need to take into account your previous reckless youth and train round your injuries and, of course, be stricter in what you eat and drink! If you are sat around doing nothing then eat less and eat more carefully. You don't have to grow to 300lbs before taking action!!! There is plenty of good advise on this board so read plenty and enjoy.

I'm not 40 yet, but close. My shoulders are so weak from my youth activities of football and gymnastics. They hurt so badly, but now that I'm older, I don't just work through the pain like I used to. If they start hurting, I'll back off the weight or move to a less stressful movement. I'm actually having more success with strength and size gains by workin around them then working through them.

By now, you should really be able to know what's going on with your body. Listen to it.

look into prolotherapy, botox injections (getting them in the chest and cervical spine to relief muscle tension), and fonctional training with resistance band. Of course losing weight and muscle mass is always better when you get older, you just dont need 20 inch arms anymore. Also work a lot on flexibility.

for joints, especially knees, there is HA injections (hyuarlonic acid.. not about spelling)
in addition to that, you can take HA powder orally
then there is always MSM powder... 5 grams a day for life. there is a reason why vets give the old race horses MSM. after a few weeks, the horses are more frisky, able to move better.

I've done all the above, and i feel about 90% of what I was when I was 21, most of the time.

    Getting older BLOWS!
My diet is good, and I work out 5-6 days a week - but really all it does anymore is help me not become a fat sack... Fatigue, joints, etc., it ain't like when I was 25, that's for sure!
I will say, regardless of the workout, whether it's jogging, H.I.T., or heavy lifting, just doing any workout does wonders for helping me feel better through the day, sleep more soundly, etc. - Even if I don't see much in the way of results like I could 15 years ago.
I'd say no matter what, at least stay active, and try to eat right.

Get good rest, eat clean, drink A LOT of water, stretch and excersize. Did I mention "STRETCH"?.....I'm 48 and haven't felt this good in over 30 years!. Motorcycle injuries, car wreck injuries, work related injuries, I have them. They just don't bother me as much any more.

INJURIES.....the well known territory of aging athletes and weight trainers. What isn't broken-up these days that is the question? The last year has been particularly brutal as I approach 40 in December. and I have patellar tendonosis in my right knee. Squatted for the first time today since January felt terrible under 225. I was doing 500 for 5 a year ago. Probably why I have the problem in the first place. Back, elbow, neck, all messed up from sports. The anabolics don't work the way the used to for relief either. 3 years ago I could run a short deca cycle and my joints would feel great in a matter of weeks. Not now. We beat ourselves up to achieve certain standards and the older we get the more injuries, slower recovery, decreased energy, etc...you know all the things we love. Now it's a matter of the mind. For me I refuse to believe that I can't overcome these obstacles and achieve my goals, but it just requires much more patience, planning, attention to details, and always working intelligently around injuries. I can't push 1000 percent everytime I go to the gym anymore, but I don't need to and never did. I strongly believe that basic routines, no matter how long we have been at it are the answer. I have incorporated deloads and loading phases based on the signals my body gives me. This keeps the injuries from flaring up to the point where I can't train and usually right around the time I'm peaking in a certain exercise the aches and pains are not far behind...telling me it's time to deload and probably use a different exercise that accomplishes a similar thing and doesn't hurt. Also, we know that diet and supplementation is CRUCIAL to our success. It all sounds pretty reasonable no? If I can stick to the plan I usually fair pretty well, but even at 40 I find my ego flaring up when some cocky kid in his 20s is slamming weights and making noises so everyone will see how much weight he's lifting. Then I find myself loading up the bar again with weights that I can lift, but probably shouldn't be handling without proper preparation. This is a tough time for all of us I think. At 40 there is no denying that my body is changing and I can't be 25 anymore, but I know if I'm smart and do things the right way there are periods when I feel 25 again. There isn't as much leeway to **** around these days. I can't eat two meals a day and hold my size like I use to. I can't not sleep. I can't drink at night and train the next day. Bottom line, it just requires more to get the job done and it's getting harder every year. There are some guys in my gym that are over 50 still in great shape with every injury imaginable. If they can get it done so can I.
