Scotts is overpriced garbage. You are paying for a inferior product that has a excellent marketing campaign. September is perfect time to grow grass for next year. Find out where you local lesco dealer is (john deere) thats where all the professionals get the stuff from. You can rent a core aerator or hire someone to come do 3 passes or so in different directions and then overseed with lesco premium seed (you will need to ask them what grows well in your area cause different grasses thrive in different enviorments) After you lay down your seed you will need to put a starter fertilizer on it and water it daily depending on the amount of rain you will get. Let it grow and do not cut it till the new grass germinates and grows to cut height. You can put a winter fertilizer on after last cut of the season so it will grow in thicker and quicker next year.

I will say again that watering is most important cause the seed bed needs to stay moist all the time or it wont germinate. next year if you want it to stay green and thick you will need to water it atleast 1 inch per week and get on a fertilizer program. super lush healthy green grass will grow much quicker so you will be mowing twice a week.
