Smoking reduces the bioavailability of oxygen in your blood by around 15%. Nicotine is what you are addicted to... the smoke and the cigarette in itself is a habit. If you provide your body with nicotine, you will still be addicted to nicotine but at least you will be able to get better training and recovery. Eventually you wanna ween yourself off nicotine too. It's hard to quit cigarettes but I did it before, although I wasn't years-deep into smoking. For me, quitting weed was/is harder. I smoked weed for the past 10 years of my life pretty much everyday, throughout the day. I find alcohol makes me want to smoke again. And when I drink I want to smoke anything that smokes, including cigarettes. So yeah, stay away from the alcohol if you can.
