the russians came in and fukked it all up during the war. it's never been the same since. I was actually able to get away from Kabul once or twice, and went to the thawak (sp?) valley north east of kabul. although snowing, very beautiful and peaceful, with the exception of all the rusting hulks of russion armour vehicles wasting away (and tanks) from the war.
during the 60's and 70's, it was a "mecca" of sorts for the hippies to go to, since all the drugs available. even today, i can go downtown and see vehicles painted circa "hippy days" with the big hippy flowers hand painted on the vehicles (think "Partridge Family" bus)
