"big guy" status in the gym

whats up everybody, just got home after an amazing shoulder workout

anyways a few months ago i moved across the country, found a gym and have been going about 6 days a week

at my old gym i knew a lot of people there, would have 2 or 3 min convos with people from time to time, you know, gym talk. i also knew a good amount of the staff there as well, needless to say since i moved i had to start all over again

well everyone knows who the "big guys" are in their gym, how can you miss them? haha, they move the most weight and make the most noise

well today i was doing shrugs and i use the biggest dumbells in the gym, 150s. did 4 sets of 10 and it felt great (probably have to switch to bar shrugs to add more weight)

i was placing the dumbells back in the rack and one of the gyms big guys came up to me, smacked me on the back and said "good set man"

he introduced himself and we talked for a few minutes, talked about lifting and at the end of the convo he goes "you got big guy status now, dont think that the people in here dont watch everybody else" followed by a laugh

it felt great to get recognition from one of the monsters in the gym, who else has had a moment like this?

Now, if you segregate the gym into age categories, I'm probably second or third biggest in the over 50 crowd. =)

I want to be the big guy in the gym. Its a nice target to aim for. Definitely not there yet, still work in progress. But thanks to my recent cycle, i think i am the most improved guy in the gym. The big guy in my gym actually came to me and ask if i was "on cycle" (exact words). It was the first time i got asked that. I learn from the members here to just say its the whey and creatine. He almost rolled his eyes and said ya right...lol

Its great to get that nod when you finish a heavy set. Done right not half motion and screaming like a banshee. Those nods are gold because you both know what you just did.

I am definitely by no means a small guy, but would not give myself big guy status. Everyone at my gym would easily pick the same guy as everyone else for that title. The guy is massive. I always wonder how many calories he must take in a day to remain that big. Ive always wanted to talk with him and know more about him but he always keeps to himself and never takes off his headphones so I don't want to interrupt his routine.

it was a joke mate. there are only 2 or 3 in my category that are serious about the weightlifting. the rest are in various stages of muscle atrophy. You can see their triceps sagging when tthey pick up their arm, and skin sagging at the elbow. It was an almost "by default" type annointments =)

Well, at the ol' LA Fitness it depends on what you consider big. I was thinking about it today actually. There are quite a few guys bigger than I am. But, by bigger I mean way fatter. These fools think they are the shit for some reason, but they lift what I lift. But, they look all Michelin Manned out. Just big, round and marshmellowy. . . But, they seem to think they are just so cool.

Then there are few guys about my size just a bit more ripped. Also there are just few that I hardly see that are mad huge. < I don't ever want to be that big. About my height but pushing near pro status of about 250 Lbs. @ single digit BF%.

Up until a couple of years ago, I was one of the big dudes in the gym. I liked the way it felt to go heavy especilly in the squat and bench. Following a major shoulder injury to both shoulders using 140 lbs db on the bench, I had to come to the realization that I could no longer go heavy. Since I had been lifting heavy for 20 years, it was a difficult realization at first. Anyway, needless to say I had to adjust my entire program. There were simply exercises I could no longer do. However, I successfully changed by routine around to exercises that do not cause any more damage. I work out with one of the biggest dudes in the gym and he too has suffered some majore injuries and is somewhat limited in what he can do. Need less to say, there are very few individuals who can go real heavy in the gym year after year. I am really satisfied with my current routines and those friends that I have made over the years have remained. It not the amount of weight you can press, it is the duration of time in which you can indure.
