I wouldnt say they are bastardizing Islam, more like desecrating its true meaning. I wish I could answer why these groups do the things they do and the only explaination I have is every society, culture, religion, race, ethnicity has its bad and good. The problem with the world in todays society are the news outlets superior ability to only show the negative side of everything. Ther have been protests at the US Embassy here in Kuwait over this film, and the number of protesters were in the hundreds compared to a population of 2.7 million, the few hundred protestors made the front page newspaper because of this and so it gives the impression that everyone is protesting when in reality, no one really cares about this film. Not one Arab has asked me about the film or spoken about it.
example: after certain hockey games a few will encite a riot and damn near burn a city to the ground, this also makes front page news giving the impression that every person in this city is crazy, should we all carry the crazy label for the acts of a few? NO
So you hear about 20 countries having protests about this film; open the washington post and look at how many protests americans stage daily at foreign embassy/consulates in DC alone. You will be amazed, but this doesnt make headline news because America likes to air out others dirty laundry vs. their own as do most other countries with media outlets.
About mind changing; I, you or no one else can change the minds/thought process of anyone else. You have only the power to change your own free will and I strongly believe that.
Before I joined the US Army I was catholic, never went to church, really could care less about any form of religion. I hated arabs, muslims and anyone that remotely looked middle eastern/muslim. Fast forward: I went to war in Iraq and things quickly changed. Things got worse, I was losing friends monthly to these people and my hatred grew damn near out of control. I would want to fire my weapon at anyone moving, almost killed a few IP's in the process of all this. My unit was sent to provide security/detainee ops at Abu Ghraib (Called BCCF at the time). I wanted nothing to do with feeding prisoners, giving them soap, medical attention or anything to help them, until I met a prisoner (Abu Abdullah we will call him here) who was a Colonel in Saddams Baath Party Intelligence division and a Harvard University graduate. Abu Abdullah was a diabetic so I had to give him special food at meal times which allowed him to come out of his holding area and sit with me at a picnic table and eat. We started talking about random subjects after a few days and I started to see this man as a man and not a muslim, arab, terrorists ect; After a month I asked him some of the same questions you are all asking me now and he had no answers other than "prevailing ignorance". Abu Abdullah helped me see the good side of Arabs, Muslims which helped me change into who I am today. I thank this man weekly for giving me my sanity and showing me the path to peace within myself.
The reason for this short story is to show you that its possible for people who hate for no reason to change as I did. But that person must want to change and have an open mind. News outlets hinder this in a major way. CNN is very different than CNN International, CNN will show a different view of a story than CNN International and its so sad. But Americans will continue to dive headfirst into believing what CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS ect continues to tell them.
Maybe I got a bit off track here, but I needed you all to know where I came from.
