Actually, the term Yankee or Yank dates back to the French-Indian war and fully surfaced during the American Revolution. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" was a derisive song about a simple, naive colonist, which we proudly adopted out of a sense of irony by playing it during the British surrender at Yorktown.

I find this hillarious!
Most linguists look to Dutch sources, noting the extensive interaction between the colonial Dutch in New Netherland (now largely New York State, New Jersey, Delaware and western Connecticut) and the colonial English in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and eastern Connecticut. The Dutch given names Jan and Kees were and still are common, and the two sometimes are combined into a single name, Jan-Kees. The word Yankee is a variation that could have referred to English settlers moving into previously Dutch areas.[6]Originally Posted by Bonaparte

For the record, we Canadians have our own vernacular:
it's Igloo, not house
Mukluks, not shoes
Dog sled, not pickup truck
Husky power, not horse power
Parka, not windbraker
Snowshoes, not loafers
eh, not huh
and smoke signals, not 4g network
looks good except those damn green things that f the whole thing up!Originally Posted by SteM;62***77
Did someone vomit on your fish and chips? And ketchup, not malt vinegar?
This might be a weird question, but what kind of fish is typically used in traditional British fish and chips, you know the type you get in a typical london pub with a great lager?
Here on the pacific north west it's typically Halibut, Ling Cod, or Rock Cod.
It's not fish and chips, it's fish and fries... We went through this a few years ago.

Cod from the North Sea. Although pollock is becoming more prevalent due to overfishing. Most if them do haddock too as an alternative.Originally Posted by Bigshotvictoria

Bangers and Beers. Wanna get some bangers and beers? Thats what my bud used to say. I knew which bar we were going to when he asked. They had incredible sausages...and good beer.
Some peeps write 'period' out for emphases. I am done for today, PERIOD. Meaning seriously done. The period punctuation mark is still necessary to be grammatically correct.
Eh up thee wot thar on we theeres nowt wrong wit t'english slang mind thee its ornate fo me t say I'm fromt darbysheere
Oh yea, whats up with the people in Scotland saying "Why would ya abandon me when I was just a little ween? Who the hell decided that a BABY would be called a WEEN....Sounds like the kid is a menu item on a New York City hot dog cart....
Btw it gets really fun, when you start talking about American ebonics, man that shit is even more confusing then the crazy shit you Brits say....
"Is you storyin on me?" = Are you lying about me?
"I gots to axe you somethin" = I need to ASK you something
"Yo what up yo" - Yes, these degenerate pieces of shit actually BEGIN and END a sentence with the word 'Yo', which can hardly be considered a word in the first place, just a bastardization of the word YOU.
Ay shazza ya got a durry ya c***
Ween would have been shortened from 'wee un' I expect. Or little one for you and me. Scotland and ireland still has their own language although its a dying art. The Welsh still learn Welsh at school and most of their road signs are in Welsh and English. So I suspect we can forgive them all for having a few dodgy words.Originally Posted by thegodfather

No to get off subject but in regards to guns did you know that Sweden is in the top 10 in number of legal gun owners in the world and also the lowest crime rate in the world. Only good reason for restricting legal gun ownership is government control of population.
The reason we have trouble speaking the English language is as you said, we bastardized it. We use WAY to much slang and one word has 4 meaning. It's fumy like when I visit the Philippines; most all of them know English but have a hard time understanding most people because of how poorly we use our own language. When I speak to them or anyone not English I speak a little slower and use about 1/2 as many words as I normally would. I keep it simple and I get complements all the time on how GOOD my English is. lol
I thought ween was short for "wee yin" in Scotland.
Also, in Scotland and some parts of north UK, they call babies "bairns"
what's up with this crap??
