I know a lot about science. I would consider myself an expert in biology, and most of chemistry. There are other areas of study within science that I don't know very much about. I know jack shit about physics, for example. So, when someone asks me a question about physics, I kindly say,
"I'm sorry, I don't know anything about physics and I therefore cannot answer your question as I don't actually possess enough knowledge in this field of science to know the answer."
There are even areas of biology that I don't know about (or possess very little knowledge of), and I have no problems at all admitting that I don't know. In fact, I am the first to admit that I don't know everything. I'm also always constantly learning new things, and I believe that it is only once you realize you DON'T know everything that you can only begin to learn new things. When individuals claim to have absolute knowledge and insist that they know everything there is to know about something, they are the ones that usually know very little (everyone has run into that feller in the gym that thinks they know EVERYTHING, right?). This is what I love about science - science doesn't claim to have all the answers, and will readily admit lack of adequate technology or techniques to answer a particular question at this point in our technological development RATHER THAN making up an answer just to have an answer. I personally find more comfort in the answer of "with the technology we currently have, we do not currently know" rather than some bullshit made up just to satisfy the human craving for ANY answers to a question.
So let me ask you this: why in the world do SO MANY PEOPLE (the majority of the population it seems) act like they're fvcking experts in areas of science that they know absolutely nothing or very little about? And i'm not just talking about the usual reactions we all see in friends, family, and other people in general when the topic of AAS is usually brought up. I'm talking about all kinds of things. But AAS is a pretty bad one in and of itself. I have never encountered a topic that more of the average joe acts like they're experts on than AAS. However, these same individuals would never EVER go near your car if you asked them "can you fix my engine?" if they have no training what so ever in auto mechanics. So why the change of attitude? Especially when it comes to scientific topics in particular?
What's so wrong with the answer "I/we don't know yet" or "I/we don't know because I/we ackgnowledge that I/we have no education or experience in that particular subject"? Sometimes I feel like i'm living in bizarro world with the way the majority of people act and think.
This post isn't really focusing on anything specific. It is just referring to this manner in which most people seem to act. Anyhow, I forgot who originally came up with the following quote, but it's one of my favorites: "The only thing worse than being completely ignorant is having a little bit of knowledge and believing that makes you an expert."
/end rant.
