"Stop all vitamins and supplements 1 week before surgery"

Having a knee scope next Monday and this is the standard advice - but is it valid? What do you all do?
I can certainly see stopping aspirin, advil, Vit E, and anything that is a blood thinner. But what I was especially interested in is the MSM, Vit C, calcium, DHEA, and aminos.
    Any advice?

Yes, it's advisable to avoid anything that could affect blood clotting. I'm not sure why some herbs and minerals would be of concern. Probably just easier to say "Stop everything" instead of taking the time to go through your list of supplements one by one.

There are lots of supplements that could thin the blood, even though they may not be advertised as such. So I would just adhere to the doctors advice for now.

Thank you - you're the voice of reason. It's such a little procedure, and not much bloodletting haha.
But it would be hard to explain later if something screwed up.

The ones you listed are fine (but I'd avoid free-form aminos, unless you mean BCAAs). They're mainly concerned about anything that could significantly affect clotting/thrombosis (like Vitamin K or aspirin) or have a negative interaction with the anesthetics.

I had surgery two days after an accident, and had to tell them what I was taking. For my 2nd and 3rd surgery, they gave me a list on what not to take a week out. Can't remember what, but I think it's been covered here.

Thanks, TR - maybe because it's such a quick surgery, and arthroscopic at that.
One of the ones I wanted to continue was the MSM (as you advised).
The other thought is my pre-/intra-training drink with various aminos. But I spose I can live with them for a week. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the help, Bonaparte, they ARE powdered aminos, glutamine, creatine, leucine, and taurine.

Thanks so much, Redhawk. That's a lot of surgery! I hope you're doing better now.

Those are fine. I was just concerned with aminos that increase NO and cause vasodilation or metabolic changes.

Oh, I didn't think about the NO aspects.
    I appreciate that.

I could see maybe a major procedure but just a knee scope I'm not certain. I'm not a doctor but I doubt I would stop myself personally.

Thanks, that's what I was interested in.
I'll survive, and the week will probably go by fast. Taking the vitamins and supps is more of a mental thing, rather than a real need!
    Thank you.
