I had horrific GERD until I tried eating Paleo, and it vanished overnight. Turns out carbs and grains especially aggravate it. Any time I reintroduce grains it comes back after a couple of days. Other carbs are OK in moderation, but still cause random flare ups. Might be worth giving Paleo a shot.
PPIs have some nasty side effects with long term usage, and GERD also is associated with precancerous lesions in the esophagus, so you should try and solve it at the earliest.
Oh and never ever lie down with a full stomach.
