I could swim then & only the bare minimum to pass the test. Agree, tight spaces (Fuck caving) freak me out.
In college, my scuba professor was ex-navy & was into maintaining composure. His favorite drill (and my least favorite):
Tread water in deep end x 2 minutes to get breathing a little heavier.
Swim to the bottom of the 15 foot end of the pool.
Locate the damn mask
Put it on, then clear the water out (have to exhale air)
The regulator to breath through has a combination lock on it with the combination written on it.
Undo the combo.
Take the regulator and attach it to the air tank.
Take a couple of breaths.
Do the reverse.
Resist flipping off the teacher.
Still, diving through thick 15 foot kelp with full gear, getting the gear tangled in that & having your mind thinking that you could easily encounter a shark that you can’t see till you’re face to face? Did that once, never again. Needed lots of visibility and warm water from that point on.
