    unless he used his moderating powers, I would venture to guess that he found the sweet spot of the paddle where the pong goes straight up and then straight down landing in the same spot it bounced before. I tried to find it but was off just a tad everytime.

    Bingo. There's a bug in the version AR is running and there's an updated version that fixes the problem.
