Well my theory on this is i guess what i would call the "visual/emotion amplification theory" (too tired to think of a better name)
basically takes the standpoint that looks are neither good OR bad but that looks are simply an amplifier in any courtship. (not always a good thing)
I'll explain.
Im sure you know plenty of ugly ass dudes with hott ass brauds as well as goodlooking dudes with hot ass brauds. So what would the obvious natural expected outcome be??
Two schools of well justified generalizations.
One school says theres SOOO many fat ugly guys with smoking chicks.. what is wrong with these women??
The other says goodlooking girls are only attracted to goodlooking guys.. awww shucks, looks really must matter.
The reality of the situation, looks only amplify the state you produce around a woman.
IE:
Goodlooking guy with no social skills or social value approaches a hot woman. In her mind she will unconciously hold him to meet a higher expectation, because he is goodlooking and she EXPECTS him to have been more accepted in society (because goodlooking people are) and will expect him to have more experience with women in general.
Turning point:
Guy creates a negative atmosphere when hes with her. In reality hes shy, reclusive, and a very akward communicator. But WAIT hes GOODLOOKING and DOESNT have SKILLS?? What is going on here? Woman assumes something deeper must be wrong with him, attirbute more negative to his identity than he deserves. (even if theres nothing really there) this is the result of good looks amplifying a negatively induced state making the seduction state worse.
Plus you have the chance that woman get nervous around goodlooking guys, so he actually has to do more work to build comfort with her, so you can see how this can take a quick dive into a dry pussyless abyss of shameful self satisfaction.
Another example:
Guy creates positive atmosphere around her, builds a deep rapport rather fast, makes her extremely comfortable. Even though this is what she was hoping for and possibly expecting, the combination of LOOKS + SKILLS is actually multiplied, not ADDED. And the outcome state is amplified and the woman is courted A LOT easier rather he had just been ugly with skills. If she is sexed after the seduction process she will attribute the fact to things other than the amplified state ie: i was drunk, i got into a fight with my bf, he was just too hot. Because obviously shes not going to bring any real logic into why she acted like a slut, that would make her feel more vulnerable, so shell attribute the outcome to something meanlingless and confusing to confuse herself in the ultimate means of confusing other people. Its actually a quite simple/sophisticated process. If i dont understand why i acted like a slut, and i communicate this with other people. They'll attribute my behavoir to things out of my control and will me more likely to think of me in a favorable fashion.
Because if you UNDERSTAND you weakness you have a perfect reason not to have it. Its actually a rather simple yet sophisticated thing people do. Demonstrate you dont understand it, and people will have a lot more sympathy for you when someone else preys upon those weaknesses. Your viewed more in victim terms rather than someone who provoked the predator.
Ok that may be straying off topic.
BUT main point here is..
Looks are never a foundation for anything in men. The foundation is other things (way too much BS to get into). But looks are rather something that *AFFECTS* the foundation. Amplifies it. Have a good foundation NO MATTER what, and you'll eventually come to find... looks really dont mean anything. Especially what you once thought they did.

You're right - it's a bit of a myth that women only go for a hot man.
