its a way fellow members *imply* that the atmosphere or subject in the forum is simmering about the threshold and the thread may get locked.
i actually see it as fellow members looking out for each other.
theres been times where ive been in heated debates with someone and when people started posting "in before the lock" i realize i needed to chill out.

so it does serve more of a purpose than just being a whore imo. more of a function than posting a thread about it.
