This sounds quite serious. There is a lot of joking going on in this thread but this is a potentially life threatening situation and not funny.

I would agree with you that a firearm is not the best option. You are more likely to be killed with your own firearm than you killing an attacker.

    Some alternate suggestions:
    - Can you not have someone come stay with you for a period ?Friend, family member.

    - Possibly rent out a room to someone that is referred to you by your church?

    - Figure out a number of escape routes out of your house and practice getting out. If something happens you may panic and freeze, so you need an "auto-pilot" drill that you have hard-wired into your mind.

    - Speak to your immediate neighbors and tell them what happened. Even if you dont know them it will give you an excuse to just make contact in case you need to bang on their door in an emergency.

    - If you can afford it get a panic button service from a reputable private security firm.

    - The dog can definitely add an early warning option but if you are not used to having one around it will have an impact on your lifestyle. You also need to very careful on selection. You need a "ready made" dog i.e mature, alert, reasonably trained etc.

Not much help but anyhow I hope you will be ok and ideally get some assistance that can alleviate the fear that you are carrying. Take care and let us know how you are doing.

My grandpa thought the stickers on the windows of your house that say protected by ADT or some other security system were all you needed and he never bought the securtiy system to match the stickers.

Well the big dog is a great idea,he wont be big at first but he will get there.just stay on ur toes and be aware of ur serroundings an u should be fine.It is very odd tho the whole gas thing, that strikes me as odd.Calling the cops was the best thing u could have done. And i would choose the dog over the pistol any day of the week .anybody that is looking to harm u or break into ur house will think twice when they see a 125 lb rotti in the window
i had one a female and she was smarter the most people i know and very pertective of me and my family.

I've chosen to stay in my house that's for sale because the school that I teach at is located in my neighborhood. I can literally walk to my school from my house. I could chose to stay with my sister that lives near me on occassion, but she just got married and I don't want to intrude on her and her new husband.

For all that I know, someone could have come into my home in attempt to kill his/her self. Not me. Will this ever happen again? I'd like to think not but I don't know. Hopefully my house will sell quickly and I can become close to my new neighbors at the new place where I choose to live.

What did the cops say? Change my locks immediately. They also told me to place some signs in and around my house to make one believe that security cameras have been installed. So I've now got a sign underneath my front door mat that reads, "Smile, you're on camera". I know that would make me flee the scene if I were a criminal.

    Thanks for your feedback.

I would think about getting a taser. They are non lethal but effective. You should seek proper training in there use. A good dog is also a super idea. I have a staffordshire bull terrier and an english bull terrier. Both are loyal and keep my GF safe when i am not there. Fit decent doors. You need steel frames, hinge protectors and a couple of quality locks. The door should also be of steel and would construction. I have this type of door fitted to my bedroom too, The only way you will get through it is with a disc cutter and most opportunist criminals do not carry these.
Other than that or you can hire me and ill come shoot the guy for you....

Glock-26 9mm with "protection" hollow points that open up to .40
In Texas you don't even have to get a license to carry any sort of weapon loaded in your car. Loaded with one in the chamber makes it a little more difficult for people to car-jack you, but in your case if anyone is in your house uninvited you can shoot....make sure you shoot to kill because then they cant sue you.

Every thread I see Goodcents posting in I just go right past his posts on account of 99% of them being annoying garbage.

Mrs Mavsluva, we are all different and if guns really aren't your thing, then you need other options. Many people have mentioned dogs, so maybe getting an alsation or doberman would be a good choice? It would give you piece of mind AND would give you some company.

mrs mavs.....have your stove checked, the pilot lite should have lite the burners, or the safty flow switch should have closed off the gas flow. having seen a vid mavs made in your back yard,i assume that your stove is a newer model. this shoulnt of happened, no flame, no gas allowed to flow. i pray this is the problem and not some nut. best wishes to you and yours..

So let me get this straight, somebody got into your house and they effectively had a key to let themselves in as there was no forced entry ? If so I presume you have changed the locks already ? If not, do it today. I think given your fear of guns, the Taser and Pepper Spray would be good things to have near by. The Dog is a good idea while you are in the house but you will have a problem if you move into an apartment.

I said Alsations earlier, which is just another name for German Shepherds and I thought of that dog for all the reasons you just said. They're my favourite dogs

i would say get a dog and raise it from a puppy. it will be the most loyal thing you've ever owned. anything over 60-70lbs will work. ive got a 70lb b1tch yellow lab and when somebody tries to walk in the house that 70lbs looks a lot bigger when all the hair stands up and the teeth come out. and she can do almost everything except start the car. and if you have somebody come over(invited) they will be more comfortable than if a rot was in there. their protectiveness is based on your emotions.

but i would seriously get a gun. i know you dont want to shoot somebody but if the dog is after them and the gun is pointed at'em too that would be enough to make anybody tuck tail and run.
