i use the alternating grip with chalk. the chalk is awesome, but it dries the hell out of my hands to the point that my fingers rip open in the folds when the weight gets up there. i've had some nasty tears that take forever to heal

there is no need for straps. chalk and overhand /underhand grip. get your forarms strong enough to hold the weight
