i am thinking a 9mm or .38

I will agree with that 100% man. No argument on my part.Originally Posted by gixxerboy1

More trained armed citizens and this shit would come to a stop in a damn hurry. Not vigilantes, trained responsible citizens. If i was the guy that walked into the movie theater and opened fire, I would think twice knowing several of those people might fight back with equal deadly force, I may just may change my mind.
I went with the .40 because if I gotta pull my gun out; someone's dying. I have no need to pull my gun out unless some 9/11 type shit happens, or someone is in my house that shouldn't be.
Any thoughts on the 10mm for home defense? I'm a big guy, I've shot a glock .45 and handled it fine.
The SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure for the 10mm Auto is 37,500 P.S.I.
The SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure for the .40 S&W is 35,000 P.S.I.
The SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure for the .45 ACP +P is 23,000 P.S.I.
The SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure for the .45 ACP is 21,000 P.S.I.
The 10mm Auto provides a hand gunner with the power of a .357 Magnum revolver with the increased magazine capacity and rapid reload capability of an automatic pistol.
10mm AUTO.
Guns chambered for the .40 S&W combine high-capacity magazines with acceptable stopping power. It is slightly less powerful than the 10mm Auto — which reduces the probability of over-penetration — but is considerably easier to control during rapid fire. As a result of testing to optimize terminal ballistics on the 10mm Auto, the FBI adopted a reduced power loading. Smith & Wesson subsequently offered a cartridge with a similar power level chambered in a pistol with a high-capacity magazine. In an amazingly short period, the .40 S&W has gained wide acceptance throughout the U.S. in the law enforcement field. The .40 S&W is an easy cartridge to load and gives excellent.
Interesting....I've been talking to a few people in the past couple of days about applying for a permit to carry. I'm not a huge proponent of guns but I am becoming increasingly worried about all the craziness happening lately. I don't want to come off paranoid but there have been so many random shootings lately that its starting to concern me. I don't know if its the season, the whole end of the world stuff, or if things in general are becoming increasingly violent. In the past week alone, there was the Connecticut shooting, a shooting at an Oregon mall, a murder-suicide in a Vegas Casino, the gunman running through the CSUF campus and then this past Friday, some idiot standing in the parking lot of a Newport Beach shopping mall decided to fire off numerous rounds. Fortunately no one was hurt in the NPB mall incident, but damn, every week now it seems like some crazy bastard is shooting people!!!!Originally Posted by Capebuffalo
I've got a very good home security system but I'm starting to wonder if that's enough. All doors and windows are armed and there are multiple cameras and motion sensors throughout the property but if someone wants in bad enough, that won't stop them.
I've been told a shot gun would make a better home defense weapon than a hand gun, especially if I have no plans to carry.
^^^agreed
That pump is pretty intimidating. Especially if you hear it before you see it.
True....it does keep HAW from getting out! I don't want to call it a prison...........but I do let her out on weekends in the yard for exercise. Lmao.Originally Posted by Capebuffalo
Yes, maybe a nice double barrel pump action would send most would be assailants running in the opposite direction.
Hopefully the permit/registration process in California is not as screwed up as everything else here!
Might have to hide the SG from HAW. She's likely to maim herself......or shoot me!!!!!!!!
Oh lord we have a lot of work to do.
A pump will have one barrel.
A double barrel would work but your limited to two shots as opposed to 5-7 with a pump and a mag extender.
You want a short barrel for close quarters, a pistol grip for better handling. A rail system to add light and laser if wanted.
Damn! How about something to point and shoot????Originally Posted by Capebuffalo

......and just think, the state of California could give ME a permit!!!! LolOriginally Posted by Lunk1

Told ya doc...check out the Taurus Judge. Small shotgun in a handgun frame. Perhaps the best home defensive handgun available
Hey, anything called the "Judge" already sounds effective!Originally Posted by Lunk1

Sounds really nice.
For home defense you'll undoubtedly want a 12 gauge shotgun, Mr. MI. I'd go with a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 with a short barrel (18.5in to 20in) on either which is ideal for good pellet disbursement.
If you obtain a CCW and you're in public I'd get a Glock 23 (.40 cal) or a Glock 19 (9mm) in a concealed holster. Glocks are the real deal when it comes to handguns.
Thanks Shsm. Damn, I'm so gun ignorant its pathetic! Lots of reading for me to do. I'll spend some time in Canada looking things up.....that'll make my gun opposing Canadian family real proud! LolOriginally Posted by Shsm
I told Lunk that if I went with a hand gun, it would be a Glock for sure.
All joking aside.....I appreciate the feedback and helpful input. I really am gun illiterate. I've fired a few assault riffles when I was younger at one of the military bases in Canada where a friend's father worked, but outside of that, I have zero gun knowledge.
I'm going to apply for a permit and then go to a local range and get some safety and usage training. I've spent my life helping and saving people so owning a gun is somewhat in opposition to my education and beliefs, but, I am growing sick and tired of the shit heads out there who have little or no respect for life and I don't want me or my family to be a casualty to that ignorance and disregard for life.
Shotguns are okay for home defense but they are kinda limited outside the home. Yea.. you can spray someone in your house (don't forget you are spraying your house too) but nothing beats having a good pistol and KNOWING HOW TO USE IT.
I have my .40 in a GunVault to prevent my kids from ever getting their hands on it. I can reach under my bed and open the safe in the dark. I'm no sharp shooter but I've spent enough time at the range and the 180 gr hallow points will do their job if I'm "close enough".
Will also take a .44 mag I assume.Originally Posted by Lunk1

No it won't. The Taurus Judge will accept 45ling colt and .410Originally Posted by Capebuffalo
The Smith and Wesson Governor will accept, .410 buck/bird , 45 long colt and 45acp with the moon clip provided by manufacturer.
Inky Poo come I will teach you a few things about guns. Lol
We tested the Governor and it ate everything we put through it. It also comes with a front night sight. The Governor patterned better with the Remington Home Defense buckshot load. The Winchester Home Defense round did well but didn't pattern great. But hey if you get in the general direction who cares about a pattern, we aren't talking about turkey heads here.
I'm going to have to visit you or Lunk in 2013 to get me properly schooled! It may come down to which state HAW wants to visit. LolOriginally Posted by AXx
