I agree that the fashion looks stupid. But then, so do a lot of other fashions. If all the stupid fashions were outlawed, then we'd all end up wearing jeans and t-shirts, unless someone thought those looked stupid as well.

However, for anyone inclined to intervene on behalf of anyone awkwardly attired, you might make them aware that if they wanted a job with someone who thought that sagging pants indicated stupidity (which would include most employers), they might never get a job. But dressing to please a prospective employer could result in a steady income.
And the choice, as it should be, would be theirs to make.

You say that the prejudice associated with the sagging of pants is similar to the prejudice against people with tattoo's. I would disagree. My contempt against people who choose to wear their pants in such a manner is that I feel it portrays a lack of respect for ones self and ones community. I do not feel that tattoo's in and of themselves are an offensive thing to have on ones body. However, I would say that if a person were to display tattoo's on their body which displayed profanity, obscenity, or nudity then a bias against such displays would be warranted in the same way people assume a person with sagging pants is discriminated against. It is about an outward display of disrespect to the community, and not a racial issue. It becomes a racial issue if you decide it is one, but to those of us who are arguing soundly against it, to suggest we are racializing the issue is incorrect.

respect for other. and also them selfs. i had a costumer dressed the same way trying to get a refinance for his house from me and his credit score was only a 370 after i told him his credit score he said, " So man what you saying" the funny thing was his house payment was two months past due but his car was up to date....

I think you're putting way too much into why young people sag. It's just a style. My 17 yr old kid was brought up pretty damn good and even he was sagging along with half the kids he goes to school with.

I wasn't really trying to refute your point of my assumptions being normative values. We judge people by their appearence every single day, and no one says anything about it. Most of us on this board would look at a fat out of shape person and say they most likely are a person who doesn't care about themselves, lacks discipline, and stuffs their fat face with food all day long.

My problem was with you characterising those of us who judge people by the sagging of their pants as embracing some sort of a "racist" ideology. People are judged every single day by a number of parameters and of course they are all based on normative values. Sure, we should all get to know every person we see and find out that they are really a person who contributes to society, has feelings, and is a great member of society. Of course that would be completely impractical and a huge waste of time. So instead we determine who we will interact with based on a number of superficial characteristics.

What statement would that be? That they can dress like complete jackass's? They would not show up to work for me looking like that. Im assuming we're talking about communities in the United States, where dressing like that is completely inappropriate. I'm all for people being individuals, but in most work settings there are dress codes to be followed, and having your ass hanging out of your pants isn't cutting it. There have been towns that have tried to pass ordinances against dressing in such a manner, and I completely disagree with any attmept to legislate a dress code. People should be free to wear their pants 12 inches off of their ass if they please. Just know that I dont have to take them seriously or give them an ounce of respect as I feel their attire is disrespectful and inappropriate in pretty much any setting except for a music video.

I actually know why sagging started...or its a good theory..

It started with poor families passing CLothes down to one another, usually a big brother handed down to a younger brother, and the clothes were usually to big..etc.. so it would sag off and be baggy...

And majority of these poor families would usually have members committing crime, selling, doing drugs..etc.. (thug life) .. blah blah..
