When I work chest or shoulders, I have to warm up the rotator cuffs.
I start by hitting the treadmill for 5-8 minutes, then some light stretching. I then go through all of those old baseball stretches for the shoulders (making small circles...slowly getting bigger, swimming and the like). I slowly move my arm in every imaginable direction, while applying increasing resistance from the shoulder muscles. Once I feel pretty loose, I will pick up a 5 lb weight and do the same thing over again. It is important not to let momentum enter into the stretches or the warmups. Everything must be controled...or you risk greater damage.
