    Home Networking Problem

    Bros,

I am having a problem getting two computers on the same router to talk to eachother. The PCs are a Dell Desktop and an ACER Laptop. The Dell is connected via wire to a NETGEAR WGR614v6 router and the Laptop is connected wirelessly to the same router. On the desktop I can "see" the laptop, but cannot access the files. On the laptop I cannot even access "workgroup computers"...anyone have any ideas on what is going on?

I am running XP home sp2 on both machines. I am at a loss as to why this just isn't working. I set up a similar situation at work (but not wireless) and had no problems and it was more comlicated by far.

    Thanks,

    BigJ

I am not an expert, but I can access files on both my computers by making the files I want available in a SHARED FOLDER. My experience has been just playing with the computers with trial and error. GOOD LUCK

Just a thought...but maybe it has to do with the firewall.

What are the IP addresses of the two machines ? Can you ping one ip address from the other ?

what are the 2 ip's. They might not be in the same class. Also , I can't help much without knowing how you config'd your wireless router...default?

Chances are they're both getting the IP's from the router, so make sure they're both set to DHCP, Dynamic IP assigning.

If you can ping both computers, then the network has to be working and is configured fine. See if you can ping the computers by computer name.

Also if one pc can see one computer and one cannot you still have two way communication, just from one PC. So either this is a firewall issue, or a Master Browser issue.

Turn off any firewalls that are on either pc's. Check for Windows Firewall and if its enabled. If so turn them off and see if things are working. Then if that fixes the issue, you can enable to firewalls just need to configure them.

I had a problem similar to this a while back ago. I was stupid and it took me like an hour to figure out Zone Alarm was blocking it from both computers. Then I changed them both to trusted zone and it worked fine. Good luck.
