Anyone ever had a pet get mange?

Something has not been right with my min pin.

I've slowly been noticing spots on her body where shes progressively been losing hair. It started on her stomach, and now its on her face and ears.

I keep telling my mom (she lives with my parents right now) "something is WRONG with her" but my parents keep saying its due to her age (shes 7 1/2). In any case, in the span of about 3 months she has lost quite a bit of hair, and it just doesnt make sense that its cause shes getting old. The rate shes losing it is just too fast.

My question is has anyone treated their dog for this? Can I treat it myself or is this a mandatory vet trip? Just curious if anyone knows anything about "mange"..

Yeh I'm reading more and more cause I'm trying to figure out why our other dog doesn't have it.
And I read: Red Mange, demodectic mange in dogs is caused by a sensitivity to and overpopulation of Demodex canis as the animal's immune system is unable to keep the mites in check.

That means ALL DOGS already have it, but stress or malnutrition can lead to an overpopulation of the mite which results in abnormal shedding (my dogs sheds more then any dog I know, if you touch her you get hair all over your hands) bald patches, and pain in the infected area that can lead to scratching the skin till it bleeds (I noticed on of the bald patches had a bloody scab on it).

So yeh I'm just taking her to the vet now. Doesn't seem like something simple enough that I can treat.

The mange is very common here in the south burnt motor oil(used oil) will get rid of it just dip em in it

This may be a dumb question but where do you get burnt motor oil? Do I have to drain it from my car? Is that burnt?

I hope it had nothing to do with the mange that would be terrible.

We've decided to try a natural homeopathetic route this time. The doctor recommened feeding her an all raw food diet, we got her vitamin c, enchinacea, and he said to apply dilute vinegar to the skin twice a day.

I did like the point the doc made about if I take it to the vet they're gonna throw it on some antibiotics and give it a toxic parisitic bath. And he was explaining that its not going to help really increase the immune system when shes gets off so we're gonna try a natural safer route first.

Would hate to see anything happen to my baby.

I worked at a vet for a while. All they do is give them a Mitoban dip which is a sulfer based dip. They do that for once a week for about 6 weeks. If it's REALLY bad they give them steroids.

Mitoban is easy to get and administer but you have to use gloves and goggles and you can't poor down the sink :P

oh and the vet should charge no more than 35 bucs for the treatment not including diagnostic fee on the initial visit.

Yea or if you know anyone that stores they're oil after they change it. It really works it might sound crazy but it works I've done it many times. Its obviously messy need to leave it outside for awhile

it is a poison because it has to kill the mites! I've never had a dog even get sick from it. If you want to know how to actually administer it, let me know.

P.S. my son is allergic to sulfer and when the dog had his treatment it didn't irritate his skin...that is how little sulfer there is in it.

I've never heard of this before but I can see the logic since oil kills EVERYTHING. I'd only be concerned because oil leaves residue which could make the dog sick...but i guess if you dish soap wash them it will get most of it off.

Yea it works its one of those old men remedies I've done it a lot I've never had a dog get sick from the oil and it always clears the mange up. It gets really hot down here and the mange is very common everybody I know changes there own oil out there trucks so all my buddies have dipped their dogs in oil then after half hour or so wash em off

I've also done the used oil thing to a dog. It does work. Out here on trash pickup days houses leave oil out for recycle in certain areas. I just took somebodies
