Where did the term Bakers Dozen Come From?

Ok guys and gals a little history lesson from IC just in case you ever have any trivia questions that pop up your way.

Where did the term Bakers dozen come from?

In ancient times, bakers were subject to servere penalties for short weighing their customers. In Egypt for example, bakers were sometimes nailed by the ear to their shop doors when caught selling light loaves. Bakers were deafly afraid and when the English Parliament passed a law in 1266 that strictly regulated bread weight bakers of course were even more concerned. Since it was difficult at the time to make loaves a uniform weight, bakers began adding a thirteenth loaf to each shipement of 12 they sent to a shopkeeper or retailor. This freebie assured there would be no shortchanging, and more importantly, no -ear nailing!

Just in case any of you ever wondered.

i'll remember that the next time the bagel guy only gives me 12 bagels. When i threaten to nail his ear to the door he'll surely throw in some free.
