Want To Know How To Shave & Then Some?

I came across this from MensHealth, and thought it would be nice to post. Enjoy!

Shave in the Shower to Prevent Bumps and Razor Burn
If you develop redness, rash, or ingrown hairs because of your morning shave, try shaving in the shower. After a few minutes, the hot water opens your pores and softens your whiskers more effectively than a quick splash or two from the sink. Plus, nobody asks questions as long as you're in there.

    Work the Angles
For an especially close shave, go with the grain, then lather up again and mow gently against or across your whisker weft.

Don't Put Your Two Scents In
If you wear fragrance, use an unscented shave cream. You don't want her nose sniffing a mixed message.

    Be Paternal
"If you're a strap-and-blade guy, let her catch a glimpse of you shaving," purrs one of our female colleagues. "There's something elementally male about it. Oh, I don't know, maybe it just reminds me of my daddy." Paging Dr. Freud. . . .

Where to Buy: Norelco electric razor, $170, philips.com; Nivea for Men Fresh Cooling After Shave Balm, $6, nivea.com ; Anthony Logistics Electric Preshave Solution, $12,anthony.com

    Shaving Time
Now that you have more choices than Barbasol and a Bic, don't be overwhelmed by the shaving aisle. Try this new-and-improved process to save your face.

    Step 1 (30 seconds) Exfoliate.
This removes dead skin cells from your face and lifts your stubble. We like: Sharps Face Daily Prep Foaming Scrub ($19, sharpsusa.com). It's gentle enough for daily use.

    Step 2 (30 seconds) Prepare.
A preshave oil is essential if you have more than a day'sgrowth. A few drops ensures a smooth shave. We like: Anthony Logistics Pre-Shave Oil ($18, anthony.com).

    Step 3 (2 minutes) Lather.
A brush is best for lifting whiskers. If you go hands-on, make sure you've really massaged the foam into your beard. We like: Nickel Smooth Operator Shaving Gel ($15, nickelformen.com).

    Step 4 (30 seconds) Shave.
The best razor is one that lets you use a light stroke so you don't push down too hard, risking nicks. We like: Gillette's M3 Power ($18, theessentials.com). Helps lift stubble without excess force.

    Step 5 (10 seconds) Repair.
Nicked? Use a naturally medicated stone that contains healing alum and potassium. We like: The Art of Shaving Alum Block ($15, theartofshaving.com).

    Step 6 (30 seconds) Moisturize.
Leave your face a little damp and massage in a moisturizer or aftershave to seal in the moisture. It'll keep you from looking old before your time. We like: eShave After Shave Soother ($19, eshave.com).

    Step 7 (5 minutes) Restore.
Once a week, use a natural clay mask to help your skin heal from the taxing process of shaving. It can't be used as a Halloween costume, but soothing minerals and oils calm shaving irritation. We like: The Art of Shaving After-Shave Mask ($65, theartofshaving.com).

    The Average Guy and Shaving
Age at which the average guy-as-adolescent began shaving: 14

Time it took for the novelty to wear off: 1 week

Number of times the average guy shaves each week: 5

Percentage of men who shave while driving: 4

Style of facial hair the average guy would most like to see make a comeback: Goatee, like
    Fred Durst

Percentage of women who disagree and say men should shave, all of it, every day: 29

Percentage of men who prefer that their partners shave off all their hair "down there": 40

Percentage who say, "Let it grow as God intended": 5

Percentage of men who have pruned their own gonad garden: 79

Number of men who have trimmed their chest hair: 1 in 10

Number who admit to plucking their eyebrows or having it done professionally: 1 in 50

    We're Serious About Exfoliating
Exfoliation sounds frilly, but it's great shaving prep, says Matt Teri, vice president for product development at Aramis. It urges your whiskers upward, where they can be whacked off cleanly. Finish up with a moisturizer with SPF protection.

Problem: Dry, Flaky Skin and Ingrown Hairs
Solution: Deflake with an exfoliating facial scrub. It will help you get a closer shave while reducing ingrown hairs. Then moisturize.

We like: The Art of Shaving Facial Scrub, $22. theartofshaving.com

    What's Better? Blade or Electric?
Blades give the closest shave, but that's also their downfall. They're much more likely to leave you with a nasty case of pseudofolliculitis barbae--those red post-shaving bumps that hurt like hell and don't look too great, either. Razors can sharpen your hairs into tiny spears, and as they grow out, they can curl back into the skin, says Tina B. West, M.D., a cosmetic dermatologist in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Three- or four-blade razors produce a closer shave--but the more blades, the more bumps. If you get bumps, go electric. If you don't, choose the space-age design you prefer--neither is more likely to cause wrinkles, skin damage, or premature aging.

Where to Wear Your Sideburns Now
Long 'burns have fizzled, according to Josh Gruber, who's the manager of Rudy's Barbershop in Los Angeles -- America's sideburn-trendsetting city. "The only trend at this moment," he adds, "is to keep them short and clean. The long 90210 look of the '90s is out."

Uneven Sideburns Make a Sloppy Impression
It's happened to the best of us. One sideburn is shorter, so you trim it back, oops, try again, and again, and soon you're the anti-Elvis: no sideburns at all. Or you end up with a crick in your neck from holding your head sideways to hide your asymmetry. Next time, use this trick for making sure they're even: Hold an index finger horizontally at the bottom edge of each sideburn. When you look at your hands in the mirror, you'll be able to tell if one is higher than the other. The ideal length is shortish anyway--no more than three-quarters of the way down your ear.

    Points for Shaving Your Head
The shaved head can be several things: a low-maintenance styling solution, a way to cope with baldness, or a fashion statement. It can also be "very erotic," says Danielle Malka, who is biased--she's the founder of ê shave. First, use clippers to give yourself a buzz cut. Then, remember . . .

Your Scalp is not Your Face
"Scalp skin is tougher because the dermis, or collagen layer, is thicker," says Robert Bernstein, M.D., medical director of the New Hair Institute. "Also, facial hair grows in single units, but scalp hair grows in groups of one to four." If you're going to shave your head, exfoliate it with a facial scrub the night before. Then apply an oil treatment like the Art of Shaving preshave oil with lavender ($22, theartofshaving.com) to soften the hair and lubricate your skin.

    Use Only Alcohol-Free Shaving Creams
Check for ingredients that end in "ol," indicating an alcohol, which will dry your skin. Look instead for natural oils like coconut and olive. We suggest ê shave shave cream ($13, eshave.com ).

Pressing Down Doesn't Give You a Closer Shave
Use short strokes, under 2 inches; long ones can clog the blade with hair. Don't shave against the grain--shave sideways to get closer, or apply more lather and shave again.

    Start at the Front
Shave from your left ear to your right ear. Then shave down from the crown. A super-sharp Gillette Mach3 Turbo Champion razor ($9 at drugstores nationwide) will make the job easier.

Polish It Up With A Moisturizer That's Noncomedogenic
Use one that won't clog your pores, says Dr. Bernstein. Try Head Lube Glossy Moisturizing Lotion ($9, headblade.com).

Protect Your Suddenly Unprotected Head With An Spf-30 Or Higher Sunscreen like L'Occitane SPF 30 Sun Care Face and Body Balm ($29, loccitane.com).
