I used to have them, even though I'm not nor was ever really a runner... I got rid of them entirely by working out my shins 2x per week (not on calf day)... using a calf machine (seated or standing), keep your heels on the crossbar and dip your toes off... basically the reverse of doing calf raises... do it more for reps at a moderate/light weight for 4-6 sets...

I use to get them when I would run outside on the asphault, so I had to start running on a treadmill and I hate it but the splints are gone. Also Im sure you have a good pair of running shoes.

    ibuprofen and stretches
with your heal on the ground at a 45 degree angle to the wall, lean forward towards the wall. Lay off the running for a little while until you knock the inflamation out.

a Doctor helped me with my shin splints. I wrap ductape above and below the sore area, quite tight. It has really helped with my training.
