yeah i do them. I do them in one of my 3 leg day workouts. I superset leg exts with them, makes my quads burn like crazy.
yeh, i notice it really targets the lower part of my quad right above my knee cap. i like doing them on the smith machine.
i had to do them twice a week while playing football. nowadays i throw them in every once in a while. farthest i ever worked up to was 355x3.
I do them every now and then on the smith machine...I like to superset them with something as well.
Two suggestions:
1. Don't use the smith machine. Freeweight > Smith for a wide variety of reasons
2. Give zercher squats a go. In particular for those who find that front squats hurt their shoulders (often delts give in before quads). Gives the same, if not better results than front squats.

I do front squats only when i experience patellar distress with regular barbell squats...IMO they're not as effective
