Does anyone like doing abs? Powerlifting is fun, but ab work is just something you have to do for aesthetics and power in some martial arts moves.

I recently stumbled upon what I believe to be the best abdominal exercise. If you don't have Ubersteroids' machine, try this. I tried sit-ups and leg lifts (laying down) and never really felt as though I was getting anything out of it. Here's what I finally ended up doing:

I held myself on a chip-up bar and, with a 10 pound ankle weight on each leg (20 lbs.) I lifted my knees as close to my chest as possible (My knees didn't get anywhere near my chest, of course, but that's what you have to shoot for), trying to hunch as much as possible. I did 5 sets to exhaustion with about 2 minutes between sets, lifting as fast as possible and focusing on the negative all the way down to get both the fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fibers.

My entire abdominal region felt unbelievably sore the next couple of days, meaning that I didn't even have to do that much to get a decent ab workout. A variant you might also try is to twist your hips one way, then the other, alternating every other lift, to get the obliques. The trouble is that everyone wants good abs, but they're seldom used in functional lifting, which makes them hard to work. I hope the exercise I came up with works for you and anyone else who reads this.

from my own exp. and reading i do exercises that use more weight for lower reps because your abs arent any different than any other muscle so why train it with such high reps like its something other than just another muscle that needs to be trained the way others do

I train my abs like calves.....high rep....by the way there not like any other muscle.....there recovery rate is a lot higher which allows you t work them severa times a week , where "regular" muscles need several days to recover......so they aren't the "same"......plus I'd like to keep my waist size down that's why I use low weight high rep....

larger abs equals larger waist line ......

so what r u trying to accomplish by doing 1000 reps ? stamina in the abs? burn more caliries? why work em at all then? besides i know they have a higher recovery rate and that some ppl choose to work em several times a week, ill do 2x a week. but why does that mean u should exercise them with extremely high reps. wouldnt make more sense to be in the 15- 20 rep range at least.
this is all just from what ive read in various places from other trainers so i didnt just come up with this on my own. there are others that train the abs with actual weight and keep the reps at a normal range of 12-15 reps

besides id rather just strengthen em from squats and dead lifts and just eat right than do abs for 45 mins doin 1 million crunches, just IMO. so if i do em im gonna work em out the way i would any other muscle. at least it isnt boring

where did u get 1000 or 1million reps from?

here is a example....why would u work biceps on there own since they get worked out every time you do a deadlift or back excersise.........I'm sure those same trainers always say to curl .......same concept....

you want a shredded 6 pac then get your bf low enough....you want larger abs then do some heavy weighted a**ominal work.........my high rep "15-50" range is done twice a week for 3-4 sets of different types of excerises mainly with out weght.....just using my body weight....

so where did u get that I do 1000reps several times a week?

    1 major muscle a week...
twice a week for abs, calves, and sometimes 4arms.....

I'm just explaining to you what high rep low weight is to me and how I do it.....and I gave you a reason why I wouldn't do low rep heavy weight....

all right relax..it seemed like you were agreein with the others in the thread with doin a ton of reps for half an hour which to me is overkill and pointless.

    like I said...abs is all about bf%.....

by the way to answer your question to why I personally do I high rep low weight is not to burn calories or help my stamina......

I personally do them to help stabalize my body while doing core excersises......I do a lot of standing free weight excersises that requires me to use a bit of extra stabalizer muscle rather then sitting free weight or machine....

so my reason for my ab work out is not to shape or show my abs but to help bring up my abs strength to help stabalize my body on heavy standing core lifts.......since shape is only determined by genetics and visualisation of the abs is determined by bf%......so I use low weight high rep because I'd also like to keep my waist line as small as possible...

    hope that's a better answer ....
