Dave Pulumbo article in MD this month

I read in MD'S Pulumbo's article and his response to a cardio reltated question basically said to burn fat and add muscle you need to take in at least 1-3 grams of protein per pound of body weight and take in no more than 10-15 grams of carbs for each of your six meals a day.

Now this is coming from P, but I do realize the importance of carbs. What do you guys think about this advice?

    Basically low carbs, high protein.

He has a point. If you're full of carbs you won't burn fat. But you need carbs to pump the protein into your muscle so there is debate to be had.

    I figure:
Low carb meals, High Carb Pre-Workout Meal, High Carb PWO Shake

So you're keeping your carbs low every other time except for when you're fueling for your heavy gym session, and to bump up your insulin levels to smash that protein into your muscles. Carbs are your body's primary source of high intensity energy, so if you do cardio on an empty stomach with no carbs throughout the day it has no choice but to burn fat.

    That's my understanding anyway.

So you're keeping your carbs low every other time except for when you're fueling for your heavy gym session,Considering you burn the carbs that you consumed yesterday this dosent become much of a factor and to bump up your insulin levels to smash that protein into your muscles. Carbs are your body's primary source of high intensity energy,I guess if you wanted to get technical, this would actually be the creatine phosphate system so if you do cardio on an empty stomach with no carbs throughout the day it has no choice but to burn fat.Once again, ***ends on the level of intensity, plus it takes about 3 days ***ending on a persons activity level to fully ***lete the body of carbs

On a side note, Many, including myself, have done a great job of getting lean by doing cardio at any time in the day, including in the evening after a full day of carbohydrate consumption.

    That's my understanding anyway.
Something to chew on, anyone feel free to disagree??

Out of his own mouth, he recommended a ketogenic diet and that's exactly what I do with great results. I guess it's highly individualized.

Its kind of an older school thought, I think most guys these days are doing two things to get contest lean

    1. Were starting to see guys only put on an additional 10-20 lbs in the offseason, The days when pros would have to cut 25-30-50 lbs are kinda going out of style so to speak, If you dont put on a whole bunch of weight to lose in the first place, you dont have to resort to ketogenic diets like this.

    2. The way most guys are dieting is to just do carb cycling, Even guys in the offseason that want to stay somewhat lean will modify there carb intake on certain days, Now there isnt a specific program to follow cause every one is diff but look into it and start figuring out what works for you.

I think the only period nessecasary to carb ***lete totally is around the last week before a show to help dry out and also help fill out when you start to carb up.

However, Ive seen some of the athletes Dave P has worked with, he deff has a knack for getting people BONE dry. But to follow a diet he posted for someone else in under a 1 page column in MD should prob be taken with a grain of salt.
