    Torn Pec

So I have returned to the forum, it has been a very long time. I switched over from the darkside and was going natural for a long time. I think I tore my pectoral the other day bench pressing, but is it weird that I am not in any serious pain? Is this normal? i have lost all strength in my left pectoral and struggle to even do a push up. I feel like no muscle is present in my chest. I have attached pictures to this post so you can see what damage I have done.

Dude, see a dr. ASAP! You may have a serious injury that is now bleeding under your skin.

i fell form a horse on my outer hip, but my inner thy tuned all blue all the way down to my knee, then it disappeared in few weeks. the bruise is not the problem, it'll go away, but the loss of strength is what’s in question. definitely go see your doc.

Was the bruise caused by some blunt force trauma ie; the bar landing on your chest/ arm?

All the purple is bruising. I shouldve informed you guys that this happened in september but I was in the process of buying a home, having a kid, and had no medical benefits so I was pigheaded and didnt go to an emergency room. I havent been to the gym since and will be going to a specialist monday now that I do have benefits. I was supervised by a friend the whole time after the incident who is a doctor and she monitored me until the bruising disappeared, I havent had any xrays yet and will be curious to see the extent of the damage. I feel like the injury is around my armpit near my chest area. It doesnt hurt but I have no strength, cant even do a push up. Take my advice always have a good spotter!!!

I tore my left pectoral approx 75% in December 2005. I DID NOT have corrective surgery (although my orthopedic said he could still do it---it would be very painful with a long recovery time). I wish I would have had the surgery then. My tear was on the lower portion of the pec. I can not (to this day) do any flat-pec exercises. I can only incline press (on a Smith machine), & do other incline exercises with EXTREME CONTROL/CAUTION. BTW, yes, it does appear to me you have tore your pec. I even had some bicep involvement.

I'm just wondering, but how do you tear your pec? Like what causes that much strain to make it tear?

Everything happened so quickly when I got my injury that I dont really remember what happened. I had 395 on the bar, touched my chest and started to push for the sky when my spotter "accidentally bumped the right hand side of the bar as he turned to look at a cute girls ass. From there I think it through off the balance of the bar and the weights began slipping off the bar. I was so determined to get the weight up i kept pushing and before I knew it, it felt like someone punched me as hard as they could in my left chest and i lost all strength. the weight toppled over, made a huge noise, and I am no longer ever allowed back in Planet Fitness haha.

So are you planning on having it repaired? I am curious to see what your surgeons opinion is.

I plan on getting it surgically repaired. I will let you guys know what my doctors opinion is along with how it went, estimated recovery time, how my strength returns, pain, etc.

I truly hope you can get your muscle repaired after waiting that long. I tore my muscle and tendon off the bone and my doc almost wouldnt perform the surgery bc i waited over two weeks to see him. These kinds of injuries are very minute IF you get it fixed right away.

Like i said, i tore my whole tendon off, so it is a different situation then yours tho!! Good luck with your healing!

Try to have it repaired as soon as possible...the bruising/swelling is good for the healing process. You want to have it repaired within a couple weeks of the injury. The closer to injury time you tend to it, the more likely it is to be successful.

There are 3 types of tears: tendon from the bone, tendon from the muscle, and muscle belly.

If you heard a popping sound it is most likely the first type. There is a strong possiblity that you have a full thickness tear due to their being no pain in your case (i.e. the nerves were no longer making contact). In a partial tear, there will be some pain.

Damn, good luck bud. Your pic made me cringe. I'll say a prayer it's repairable and doesn't leave you out of commission or financially in a bind. I had a tear on my pec about a month ago. VERY painful pop while lifting 425 flat, with very minor bruising and a small knot formed that with some time has subsided. I kept it massaged, heat/ice, and stretched without lifting on it for about a month and I'm now back to lifting chest - I'm really REALLY cautious and not lifting heavy. Just lifting very light, more like rehab, and going to progress gradually over the next few months to a normal lift. I doubt I'll even try to go above 315 again. Considering HGH from the doc to help grow/heal quicker.

    Best of luck.

Just a update... Thanks to all those who replied.. I am getting surgery done at the end of the month. It will be atleast 6 months before I can even think about lifting again. I had a full tear. The surgeon is going to replace my torn tendons with the achiles tendon of a deceased man. I will let everyone know how it goes.. might even start a blog in case anyone else has to ever have this done.

I know a friend's father who was at his peak back in his day.

He tore is pec, and unfortunately his doctor recommended not doing gym as activity.

It was crude but it was the truth, so i hate to break it to ya mate, you could be
in serious trouble with an injury like that.

Judging from the pic to it's nasty.

did it look something like this (see attached) LOL

Good luck on the surgery. I cant believe you waited so long to get this done, damn. I guess I understand if you had not insurance, that would suck. I think I would go into emergency, say I was a migrant worker, had not ID, no insurance or green card. It's all free then...

Was horrified by your pics mate and really feel for you. When you get better give your spotter a smack in the nose!

Hoping the surgery goes well for you mate and the new tendon goes into place and takes well. Good luck mate!!!

Keep your chin up and think positive mate. Maybe spend the time doing some cardio (its what im going to do during my recovery)
