Massive Lower Body w/o Weight Lifting.

I was at the gym the other day and there was a guy with the biggest lower body I have ever seen in a gym or even at a small bodybuilding show. This guy's quads and claves were massive and very ripped. He had a smaller than average upper body but his lower was ridiculous...I seriously was amazed at the amount of muscle that was packed into his quads and calves.

I approached him and asked him what he was doing for his lower body and he says that he has never done any weight training for his legs...he is a cyclist...not competitve or anything...he just rides like a 10 speed bike. I assume that he has been doing this for years. Anyway, I just wanted to share that story.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

When people ask me how I get so big and if it is from eating all the time and working out constantly...I say "I dont eat very much and I hardly workout at all really"

do you see what Im getting at?

agreed, newkid. That guy is full of crap. If his legs were stacked, he worked hard.

Even look at pro cyclists, like lance, his legs are cut, but not big.

Yeah, I know exactly what your getting at.

But, how many people have you seen with massive ripped quads and calves and a smaller than average upperbody?

Also, when he was working out with weights you could easily see that he was lost in the gym. He was all over the place, jumping on different machines....he was obviously new to working out. I have seen people with big legs from riding bikes for many years, but this guys legs were huge.

maybe its true...of course there are varying definitions of "huge" but I see what you mean...

are you in a position to try it and let us know?

You know, I am sure that this guy has always had good leg development. I am sure that not everyone that rides a bike in the same way that he does would have good legs. I just cannot get over the size of this guys legs...he is a smalle guy to, about 5 foot6, small frame.

I am thinking of doing cycling 3 days per week (non training days). I am going to do this as my cardio. So, 60-70 % of MHR for 40 - 60 minutes. I need to find out how to best go about this training.

I need to do some more research on cardio, as far as the best way to burn fat and preserve muscle and how cycling differs from more popular forms of cardio, as I have never done any cardio training before.

But yes, I will try it....it will be my cardio and I will see how my legs do.

I also think that it is genetics. I am not really saying that if you want big legs ride a bike...I was mostly just sharing a story.

if he gets muscle from it he is not doing it at 65% heart rate...Just like when I do sqauts or lunges to build muscle...we go catabolic and need proper nutrition following...if you want to build muscle and get the full affect (which is to see if it builds muscle) I would cut lug day and cycle hard (mountain biking or something close and doable) for 45mins maybe two days a week...I do sprints for cardio so my leg day has been takin down a notch...but not out...JMO

I give even more of a bs answer and say I eat a lot of doughnuts and ice cream. People get kinna mad.

I don't see how you could get massive quads from riding a bike

He’s more than likely got great legs from genetics. My father has huge legs and calves and a small upper body and he’s never been serious about weight training. Some people are just blessed and it sounds like this cyclist has been.

Legs respond differently to training than other muscle groups...I am going to start cycling 3 days per week at 65% MHR for cardio...I think that it will make my quads bigger. I know that it does not make perfect sense, but it will not hurt to try....I should be doing cardio anyway.

Does anyone ride a bike for cardio?

I think that it would be hard to get your HR to 65% of MHR riding a bike.

i did it all last summer, you can do it, if it's stationary it's easy outdoors is easier, just low gear and find some hills, or country roads is what i did... and i did notice leg growth especially around my teardrop area...it does work, but my legs are comparable to my upperbody from weight training, not necessarily biking...sounds like he was blessed with great genetics...

i agree sounds like genetics - some dudes are blessed with tree trunks others look like they are riding a chicken.

genetics. he is gifted in the legs department. i have a friend whos upper body wasnt anything, but his legs were real thick. ankles, calves, thighs. they didnt look bodybuilder-esque at all, no defention or shape, but i think if he trained his legs they would be the quickest to respond. he credits playing football alot

    Good thread.

I mountain bike 4-5 times per week when the weather permits. Sometimes my legs hurt worse after a long bike ride than after 500+ lb squat days.
Hard to do both all the time, but I think there is some merit to it. I played football with a WR who had 20" ripped cavs and 30" thighs. He lifted upperbody hard, but he mainly did sprints and biking for legs. He also broke the 100M record and ran a 4.2 40. Freak of nature, I'm 100% sure genetics played a role in this also.

    Let's also clarify something.
Mountain biking outdoors is a lot different than cruising on the stationary bike at the gym while you watch ESPN.

yeah and for fat burning cardio like he asked, a stationary bike and watching ESPN isn't a bad thing at all...

The guy probably had a condition called "leganitus".

You can get this disease in any muscle in your body and is caused by neglatic nerve ending in the center of the brain that gets excited when the patient is approached by gay guys that come up to them and compliment a certain bodypart.

The brain then responds by thinking of anti-gay responses like "Oh I ride bikes... (please go away)" or "I just workout alot...(please go away)" etc. etc.

    j/k

Yeh its genetics bro, you don't very often see it with upper bodies, but I have seen many guys who dont train and yet have massive legs. I was one of them, I didnt train my legs for my first 2 years of training, because they were so out of proportion, when I did squats for the first time I could already get like 400lbs.

    true.

If you keep your heart rate monitored while mountain biking, it's possible to burn fat and work your legs. As far as adding huge amounts of mass on a bike, nothing compares to the squat rack and leg sled. It's good for definition and filling out the areas in the quad and calf that may be neglected with standard resistance training.
