    Online Universities...

i've been struggling with paying for school and then actually being able to attend classes when i sign up for them. just recently i found an online university accredited regionally (and nationally, but regionally is better from what i hear) and their history and their methods of handling degrees and transferes seems to be good. any of you have any experience with this sort of thing?

I'm looking at WGU, western governors university, and looking at the IT Security Bachelors btw...

yeah, i was worried about what employers would think but not as much as typical universities think...i guess i should have elaborated a little...i also plan on getting a masters at a more well known brick and mortar university (Florida State University) and they accept this bachelors because it is accredited by a regional accreditation agency that they trust...the only unknown for me is how they'll evaluate the credits and what all pre-reqs i'll still have before starting the masters program...

Why don't you contact the university, provide them with the details, and find out?

Here is how it works.... if you go to a University that is accredited than for most companies that is good enough.... there is no real difference on the Universities.....Some major firms and organizations will only pull from Ivy League institutions (harvard, yale, etc..), and some might use what they call a top ten tier list.... which ranks the the Universities in a certain order.... Most universities including main ones for states don't even make the top ten tier list.....that does not mean the degree is pointles... well known universities like ASU don't even make the top ten tier...

With that being said the majority of the people going to school are not going to go work for places that require Ivy league education, besides those organizations that require that are few and far between... even more so now as experience along with the education is becoming more of a requirement....

so as long as the university is accredited it doesn't matter. That is the whole reason it is accredited because the agency makes sure they are teaching students to a certain acedemic level. below are the main ones that seperate the US into categories by states.... each of these entities have a portion of the US and monitor the institution for accreditation.

MSA - Middle States Commission on Higher Education
NASC - Northwest Association of Schools and of Colleges and Universities
NCA - Higher Learning Commission of North Central Region
NEASC - New England Association of Schools and Colleges
SACS - Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
WASC - Western Association of Schools and Colleges

One last thing to add, is that if someone says that they don't recognize your degree that is recognized by these above entities...who do they think they are??? Do they think they know something better than the entity that is designed to measure acedemic achievement??? It would be narrow mindedness that thinks along the lines of "if you didn't go to the same school as me, you don't know shit" To me there are Ivy leagues, and accreditated Universities and non accreditated.... certain places are better than others at learning certain things no doubt, but don't get caught up in any other nonsense. go to an accreditated University that fits into your scheduel...

There are a lot of big name schools that do the "online degree" thing now. Here are just a few from some obscure schools you may have heard of:

    Penn State:

    Stanford University

    Harvard University

    Auburn University

    University of Washington (state)

    The George Washington University

I really could go on and on but I'm sure you get the point.

I wouldn't worry about it. Once you get your degree, it's not going to say "Harvard Online University" or "UW E-versity" (as examples). When you get a degree from a reputable school, it is the same degree you would get if you physically attended classes on campus.

Exactly. No distinction is made on either the transcript or the diploma. Online learning is very mainstream now.

Work experience is 10 times more valuable than any degree out there

  15. #15
Well...I'm not sure if I would go quite that far. Work experience is definitely important but remember...you're selling yourself to a potential employer. The employer will look at the complete picture...not just your degree....not just your work experience.

Incidentally, many job advertisements specifically list as a requirement that they want a degree. For many jobs/careers, a degree is not an option...like those who go on to become CPA's, attorneys, nurses, etc.
